Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Garden of Good in the Soundtrack   November 16, 2009
Edwin E. Sundt (Maryland)
The soundtrack for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a gem. One of the best tracks we have.

4 out of 5 stars Midnight's music   September 8, 2009
J. Scott-mandeville (UK)
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was such a good film and the music so interesting, it was great to hear the music separately after seeing the film to appreciate it better. The jazz moods and southern styles suited the film well, but are good to listen to apart from the film and the soundtrack stands well in its own right. A super album.

5 out of 5 stars Good, no evil here.   August 18, 2009

3 out of 5 stars Some gems amidst the clutter...   June 24, 2009
J. Carroll (Island Heights,NJ)

The CD is pretty much a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Using hometown composer, Johnny Mercer, for the basis of MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL's soundtrack makes perfect sense, but some of the choices of singers will leave you scratching your head, if not exactly covering your ears.
The good ones:
k.d. lang nails a beautiful "Skylark," with lovely orchestration framing her vocals superbly.
Rosemary Clooney once again proves her mastery of song with an effortless "Fools Rush In."
Brad Mehldau has some fun with "Dream" playing around with melody with solid rhythm support to good effect.
"This Times the Dreams on Me" via Allison Krauss is a great interpretation. It's just the right combination of softness with an underlying power.
Kevin Mahogany's straightforward Laura is appreciated. He just wraps the deep voice around the lyric and carries it along. Michael Brecker's tenor sax makes for a nice counterpoint to Mahogany's bass.
Diana Krall doesn't do anything new to "Midnight Sun" and she doesn't have to.
Redman makes up for his intrusive sax on Cassandra Wilson's entry with a playful take on this standard.
And then there's Tony Bennett...no complaints here.
Not quite so good:
Too Marvelous for Words" suffers because the great Joe Williams is not quite up for what this number required of him. Maybe another number would have worked out a little better.
Paula Cole sounds more than a bit lost on "Autumn Leaves." Her voice is just too slight for this ballad.
Cassandra Wilson is a great jazz artist but I would have liked my "Days of Wine and Roses" a little more straightforward and a little less Redman on the Sax
Kevin Spacey's trying a bit too hard on "That Old Black Magic,"
Allison Eastwood doesn't have the chops for "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her phrasing is just awful.
And Clint is just having a little fun, but he's probably the only one on "Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive" (That takes care of the Hollywood contingent)
So another soundtrack that has its share of good and not quite so good, but as a Johnny Mercer sampler, even the numbers I was less than enthralled with have their charm. I admire Eastwood's efforts to create a memorable soundtrack and I'm not sorry I grabbed this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very opposite Of "Midnight at the Oasis"   June 5, 2009

This is In My Opinion is One Of Clint's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Very In Depth Movies, Filled with Soul, Color , Flavor and all the Little Twist and Turns that a Classic Mystery Should be. Parts Of the Movie are so Well Done you can almost Feel Ones Self Actually in the Movie.
Definitely One of my PICS.
