A Rickie Lee Classic February 5, 2010 Gerardo Martinez Casas (San Miguel de Cozumel, Quintana Roo, México) I just can not believe that William Ruhlmann of AllMusic would call this recording pretentious and empty handed. Transfering my vinil to cd brought great memories and what a pleasure to listen Again. Brought her voice to another level, a breakthrough in it's own time. Love It....
Plain awesome February 15, 2009 David Rebel (Münster, Germany) This album has been and will be one of my alltime favourites since I was a 17 year old heavy-metal-kid-turning-into-prince-fan in 1985 (I've widened my musical interests since then). It caught me immediately and as others have mentioned, it is the perfect soundtrack to grow up to. Because none of my friends over here in Germany ever heard of RLJ or especially this album for a long time I feared that this jewel might have been forgotten, and it's great to see that others felt exactly the way I did upon hearing this record. This album is one of my 10 island-records, and if I had a choice of only three, it would still be amongst them, because it simply is plain awesome and never once failed to move me emotionally.
PS - not many have mentioned the band on this album here so far, so for all you musicians out there: The musicianship on "The Magazine" is nothing less than breathtaking.
Still the best June 26, 2008 cpm 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the album in the 80's when it came out. I ended up buying her previous albums too. I recently heard "It must be love" and decided I had to have the cd. (My record player is long gone). I got it yesterday and it is still one of the greatest albums/cds ever. Rickie Lee Jones is a poet and a musician unlike any other. From "Gravity" to "Juke Box Fury" to "Deep Space" she is both diverse, moving and original.
The arrangements are great, too May 26, 2008 Kenneth Sullivan (The South) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As most reviewers here note, the music and lyrics on this album are brilliant. In addition, however, the arrangements are genius. The horn things jive with the bass and swing like Gina Lollobrigida in a rumba contest, while Ricky Lee's voice soars and glides like Cirque du Soleil in the space station. There is complexity here that gives great pleasure in the hundredth listening, and the thousandth.
buying it one more time February 17, 2008 Elizabeth J. Crew (fallbrook, ca.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like some of my favorite books, I had to buy it yet AGAIN, because it's so good that people ask to borrow it and "forget" to return it. It is haunting and after 23 years since it came out in 1984, It's still pretty hard to find anything so evocative. It's raw and emotional, and in my opinion, her best work. In terms of creative genius, lyrics and melody combined, a beautiful album!!
