When was the last time you heard collard greens being sung about in a Christmas song? Probably never, unless you're a Run DMC fan, or were wise enough to hop on the Very Special Christmas tip. The rappers' contribution to this benefit collection is probably the highlight, although traditional songs covered by now-traditional artists like the Pretenders ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas") provide the majority of the material here. Eurythmics turn in a suitably chilly "Winter Wonderland," Stevie Nicks sings a beautifully haunting "Silent Night," and Whitney Houston proves again that she's every woman with "Do You Hear What I Hear"--that is, every woman with a voice strong enough to do the song justice. "Santa Baby," Madonna's contribution, isn't as sultry as it could be, but there's more fun thanks to hell-on-heels, the Pointer Sisters and Bon Jovi. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars A great combination of music!   January 26, 2010
Cindy G. Brown (Indiana)
I enjoyed this CD so much. It has a wonderful variety of great artists and Christmas music that I have never heard before, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Full of holiday radio hits   December 18, 2009
Jimmy L. (USA)
This is the rare album of contemporary artists' takes on Christmas music that is full of holiday classics. I was surprised how many of these songs I was familiar with from years of radio airplay around the holidays. Originally released in 1987, this compilation includes exclusive tracks from some of the biggest names in pop music at the time. And it includes holiday radio hits like Madonna's "Santa Baby", John Mellencamp's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", The Eurythmics' "Winter Wonderland", and Whitney Houston's "Do You Hear What I Hear". Don't believe me? Listen to the samples. A great many of the songs from this album have become radio staples at Christmastime, and the less-familiar songs sound pretty good, too. Bruce Springsteen's "Merry Christmas Baby" has become a favorite of mine.

This CD would make a nice stocking stuffer for someone with a Christmas music collection, or it could be a solid addition to your own holiday collection. Of all the albums in the "Very Special Christmas" series, this first one is the best, with the most recognizable songs. Most people who listen to Christmas music every year will know these songs. As an added bonus (or perhaps an incentive), the proceeds from these albums benefit the Special Olympics. I highly recommend checking this album out if you're building a holiday music collection. It would add a nice contemporary flavor to balance out oldies by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Gene Autry, etc.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Christmas CD   November 18, 2009
Roma B. Rodgers (Tempe, AZ)
I got this CD when I was about 15 years old... still have it 20 years later. It is a wonderful Christmas CD. I love the heart and soul these artists have poured into these songs. Each year when I hear them, it takes me back to specials times. I HIGHLY recommend it. Whether you're 15 or 50...

4 out of 5 stars A musical holiday delight   October 29, 2009

I originally got this on cassette, a few years later I updated it to a CD. A very good first effort by these people who try to raise money for children who are less fortunate. My favorite tracks are:

Pointer Sisters - Santa Claus is Coming To Town
The Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland
Whitney Houston - Do You Hear What I Hear?
Sting - Gabriel's Message
Bob Seger - Little Drummer Boy
John Mellencamp - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Bryan Adams - Run Rudolph Run

Madonna's version of Santa Baby is cute, but I prefer Eartha Kitt's version. Maybe because of my age. But if you're looking for a way to spice up a holiday party, play this CD. I give it a spin every year.

5 out of 5 stars Have yourself a rockin' little Christmas!   October 23, 2009

I owned this in cassette form when it was released in 1987 (!), and then later upgraded to CD about three years later. And what a treat it was - and still is. Sure, some of the songs sound a bit dated now from the '80s, like "Christmas in Hollis" and the synthesized version of the Eurhythmics' "Winter Wonderland", but even so, it was a treat to hear many artists - some in their prime then - get into the spirit.

Classics for me are U2's "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home", Whitney Houston belting out "Do You Hear What I Hear?", and Bruce Springsteen's gravelly-voiced take on "Merry Christmas, Baby".

I do have one minor quibble with this release: Yes, Bon Jovi did have a song on the original cassette *and* first press of the CD...but it is *not* the track listed on this version.

Maybe because Bon Jovi had mellowed, maybe because cooler heads prevailed and did not want overtly suggestive songs on a holiday CD, but the ORIGINAL CD had "Back Door Santa", a rocking, raunchy tune about "Santa" making the "little girls happy". I have noticed over the past five years or so that that song has become ultra rare and, in its place, is the mellower "I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas". Nice song, yes. But not the original recording the band contributed - and much more "friendly". I am fortunate enough to still have the original CD. Maybe the one "lost" track will make it valuable someday! But it is curious how it was switched and not mentioned anywhere.

That aside, if you're tired of the schmaltzy stuff or just the chestnut Christmas songs, this is sure to liven up any holiday party!

It is my favorite volume of all the "Very Special Christmas" CDs.
