Ammateur Piano Takes On Relient K October 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I must admit, if it sounds interesting and it has Relient K's name on it, I'll be a sucker and pick it up. The tributes have been most interesting, with the String Quartet giving a professional and cultured take on the band and Pickin' On giving a strange, but almost-comical take on the everybody's favorite band out of Canton, Ohio. These novelty tribute albums have carved out themselves quite a niche, and it seems that no instrument is too sacred to give tribute to somebody's favorite artist. But unfortunately, with all this cashing in, there's bound to be some low-level acts trying to get on the act, and that's exactly what this project seems to be.
Not to say it's not entertaining, "Must Have Done Something Right," "Sadie Hawkins Dance," and "High of 75" all have their moments, but I can't escape the feeling that it's an amateur job. It's as if some piano teacher went into a recording studio with the notes to the songs, and started going off. Granted, I may not be a piano expert, but I've certainly heard better. Probably the strangest track on this disc is "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything." This Veggie Tales classic sounds like it came right out of a western saloon, and while certainly rousing, the whole project has a whiff of unprofessionalism about it.
Take for example the track listing on the back cover of the CD, which reads that "Forgiven" is included in the project. Only problem is, it's not. It's nowhere to be found, and surprisingly "I Need You" appears instead. Whether this was just a printing mistake, or the project was just rushed in and out of production, I don't know, but I'm willing to guess the latter.
While at times entertaining and fun, this tribute comes off as an unprofessional and rushed hack job that gives blandness to otherwise excellent tracks. Given, if a professional pianist conceived this project, the story would read different. But as is, you would be best served staying clear of this ammature tribute.
Real Score: 2.5
Only for people who need to own everything that says "Relient K" July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this CD thinking it be a classical piano version of Relient K songs, and it was a little disappointing. Unfortunately, the makers of this CD tried to play the songs exactly the way Relient K does, except they're only using one piano. I'd say unless you love piano tributes or Relient K, there's no need for this album to be in your collection (I'm really sorry to say that).
On another note, the song list on the back of the album doesn't match the song list on the inside jacket, and the length of time for each song that is printed on the album corresponds with the Relient K version of the song, not the actual song on the CD. Very peculiar.
