Zest electric pepper and salt mills from Peugeot are not only fine examples of contemporary design, but work effortlessly thanks to batteries, a boon for those with hand or wrist issues. Each seven-inch Zest mill is made primarily of a soft-touch body that feels good in the hand and is available in a choice of several bright colors. A loop in the top and a clear acrylic viewing window add a bit of design zest. The difference between the salt and pepper mills lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt. The top of each mill unscrews for adding peppercorns and salt, while a wheel on the bottom turns to vary the coarseness of the grind. The Zest mill comes in just one size and makes a striking gift, either individually or in a set. Four AAA batteries are required for operation, and are included with each mill. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. I wanted a salt grinder to replace the old salt shaker that just dumps out salt when you tip it over. The electric salt grinder is perfect. Now we can use sea salt and get the right amount, with just a touch of a button.

This electric grinder is totally great! The motor works perfectly, and the salt comes out perfectly. It's also easy to refill, and keep clean. For me the finger loop is especially handy. I ordered an electric grinder because of my worsening arthritis and hoped it would make cooking easier. Great news! It does! This salt mill is so easy to use and so comfortable to hold that the fact it's beautiful too is just icing on the cake.

Basically a rip-off, the Peugeot salt mill (not "electric," by the way, but battery-operated) is very difficult to load with batteries and--most important--the grinding mechanism cannot be adjusted; if you use a sea salt like Malden, for instance and just want a slightly less coarse grain, you're out of luck; the Peugeot only has one option and that is very fine (!) grains and only a few at a time so it takes quite awhile to season something properly. In its favor, it's good-looking but, ultimately, no there there.
