Rennes electric pepper and salt mills from Peugeot are not only fine examples of contemporary design, but work effortlessly thanks to batteries, a boon for those with hand or wrist issues. Each eight-inch cylinder is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel that is brushed to a satiny finish, and features a clear acrylic viewing window. An S or P displayed above the power button differentiates the salt and pepper. The main difference between the two lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt. The base of each mill unscrews for adding peppercorns and salt, while turn arrows indicate positioning to vary the coarseness of the grind. The Rennes mill comes in just one size and makes a striking gift, either individually or in a set. Six AAA batteries are required for operation, and are included with the mill along with an extra bulb for the light, which illuminates the grind as it sprinkles out. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. Contrary to the description, this product is not 100% stainless steel. The top part looks like steel, but it actually plastic.
The activation button also needed to be pressed in "just the right place" to work.
The salt mill did work when you pressed the button just right and the light worked as well. There is a spare bulb that comes with the salt mill. It is also preloaded with salt.

I saw what I THOUGHT was the same set and Wms&Sonoma and then found these online. I bought them from Amazon since they were much cheaper. They are all plastic and arrived damaged. The clear plastic portion was broken on the salt mill and would not attach to the top portion. The peeper mill was cracked as well. They are very light weight and cheaply made. Get the real ones from the retail store. They are solid aluminum and real glass. I did. Amazon was pretty good about the return- after two phone calls to get my money credit back.

I can't imagine why anyone would review this product poorly. We have both the salt and pepper mills and never use anything else. The look of them is very attractive, the grind is adjustable, the capacity perfectly satisfactory, and the light is an added and very useful bonus. Everyone who comes to our house is as impressed with them as we are.

I ordered a set of these (both a salt mill & a pepper mill). They both arrived in very poor condition. The salt mill's finish was EXTREMELY damaged on the top of it. The pepper mill's finish was quite damaged all over the sides. The finishes looked like someone had taken sandpaper to them in various areas. Not only that, but the entire products appeared cheap & not constructed well. They need to go back to the drawing-board with these salt/pepper mills.
