2 out of 5 stars Ink Guzzler   September 15, 2008
SUVs guzzle gas like this printer guzzles ink. Wow! We've had the printer for about a month and a half and have printed about 1/4 ream of paper (text only). Time to replace the black ink! I received this printer as a Mac promotion - the 30 bucks I paid was worth the wireless printing and scanning, but not much more than that. The black ink cartridge alone averages more than $15 plus tax and/or shipping. If you print a lot of text, buy a cheap, efficient laser printer instead. The toner will last a lot for the average user - we have an Epson laser (cheapee, $120) and I haven't replaced the toner in over a year! Buy a Canon LED scanner for 50 bucks and there you have scanning/copying.

4 out of 5 stars No Problems   August 31, 2008
I read the reviews here, which suggest that you need to download a current driver from HP, at least to get it to work on a Mac wirelessly under Leopard. I did download it, set up the printer over USB to be wireless, and then unhooked it from the computer and plugged it in across the room. I've had zero problems. It's always available to print from multiple computers and multiple users. I've used the scan feature from multiple computers/persons and it works well. Print quality for both text and photos is good for a printer in this price range. I still use my old Canon i960 for larger color photos.

2 out of 5 stars Problems setting up wireless with WPA   August 17, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I bought this originally and had to return it because the ink cartridges would not stay in. The second one resolved this but had trouble with the wireless setup. It would not get past my WPA passphrase. From research I have done this is a common issue. Here is what worked for me:

*Open up the admin interface on the router and changed the security from WPA to disabled. Assume the problem is WPA and changing to WEP as others had done would work also.
*Now finish the install and should be successful.
*Once this is done, go to the printer itself and hit the 802.11 button on the front
*On the top left hand corner on the printer scroll to print Network Configuration page
*On this page make note of the Printer's IP Address
*Open a browser and type in the IP Address. For example whatever is the IP address put the number in after the http://. This opens the interface to manage your printer settings on the device itself
*Verify the Device is Ready with a green checkmark
*Go to the Networking tab on the top left
*Click the Advanced tab on the center of the page
*You will likley see No Authentication or Encryption selected
*Scroll down and choose WPA and Add and Confirm your PassPhrase. Leave all else to the default settings and choose Apply to save
*Now go back to your router's interface in the browser by typing its IP Address
*On your router re-enable WPA security with the pass phrase you entered on the printer interface
*Now print a test page and this should work.
*If it does not, for example when you go to print and see no default printer to select (this happenned to me). Re-run the HP CD but this time it will recognize the printer on the network when you chooose the network setup

Crossing fingers this stays running smoothly. Hope this helps others having this issue. The HP tech support guy said the other, later model printers with wireless work much better and have a wizard that does all this. In fact I would have bought one but did not like having individual ink cartridges! All in all am wondering whether this was worth all the trouble. Will post an update after I used it for awhile

5 out of 5 stars Trouble FREE!!! On 3 computers!   August 14, 2008
I got this printer from Best Buy today, with a brand new computer. I put it on 3 computers, a laptop with Windows XP Media Center, a desktop with XP, and desktop with a Vista. It chugged a little during the install on the laptop, but it got the job done, at only 512mb ram, it took exactly 13 minutes to install and test the printer. Next came the old desktop, at 1gb ram and old old XP it took 15.5 minutes, and on the new desktop with Vista and 6gb ram, it took just over 4 minutes. Just under 40 minutes from box to 3 fully functional WIRELESS print stations. I have a Linksys wireless router. I have zero experience with wireless printing. I chose the "advanced" set up from the disk though, and chose to ignore all the garbage they wanted to put on my computers. I can find ink just fine thank you. Anyway, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. This printer is awesome, and cheap. Anyone with a little time can get it to work just fine, although I can not attest to the Mac. These are all PCs - thank god. If I had anything less than the hardware I do, I can see how it would take a while, and if I had a NetGear or some other garbage router, it would also be a pain... But I don't. And neither should you. Get this printer. Now. Btw, first thing it does is spit out a test sheet, then it asks you to place it on the scanner so it can align itself. Perfection.

Lastly, to that fool who said the ink is "pricey"... 28$ shipped for both color and black is not "pricey". I paid that for one real canon tank back in the day. I didn't even look at eBay. I trust Amazon more anyway...

4 out of 5 stars My experiences with this product   August 4, 2008
I read all the bad reviews about this product and I was a bit hesitant about buying it. However, I bought one during the tax free weekend. I had absolutely no problems installing the software and no problems connecting to my router (Dlink dir 655). The install software knew that I was using WPA and asked me for the passphrase and everything worked as expected. It has been on my network working flawlessly for the last few days. No problem whatsoever. I have multiple machines on my network, another wired lan printer and a wired networked harddrive. It has not interfered with anything.
