So far a great little machine. I use mine around the house and at meetings, etc. Everybody that sees it falls in love with it. So far three of my fellow workers took the plunge. Loaded XP-PRO and all is fine. Don't expect to use this as your main word machine. It fills the void when you don't need or want to lug a monster around.

Hi I am Vince
I am a writer and needed a small carry around laptop with decent battery life; with the PC 1000H I get close to 5 hour of writing. It boots up faster than my other two Asus laptops. And the 80 GB hard drive is plenty roomy. After I complete a chapter revision to be saved, I save the chapter or portion thereof onto the hard drive in Rich Text Format or RTF. The reason being that my other computers all do not have the updated windows that this PC 1000H has. The RTF is universal to most word processors.
I can save onto three USB' all plugged in, one at a time of course, for security. The video files play great also. As with most laptops, the on board speaker leave much to be desired, most of the time though, I use a head
set. I loaded "Text aloud" and AT&T natural voices, in order to hear my writing spoken back to me, it helps with flow and punctuation use.
It comes loaded with everything you need except a cd/dve player, but then, I did not need one on for this laptop.
One problem though, is the right hand Shift key for using upper case lettering for the left hand keyboard keys, like the Q,W,E,R,T,A,S,D,F,G,Z,X,C,V,B. The right shift key is a bit two far to the right, so you have to watch when selecting those position, unless you get used to where it is. All in All I rate it a good buy and the price is right.
It is built very sturdy with strong hinges and has a nice solid weight to it. "Strong Like Bull" In fact like me.

Great Buy & Good Battery Life for Field Use October 12, 2008
ASUS Eee PC 1000H 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony I am a photographer working on a project documenting the pictograph rock art panels in Canyonlands National Park. This often requires spending multiple days in remote locations with no source of power. I needed a light weight, rugged, small computer with sufficient battery life to last at least a week without recharging. Previously I had a 13" Sony VAIO, but its battery life only lasted a couple of days. The computer also had to have USB 2.0 ports to support a backup, portable hard drive.
I only use these computers in the field to backup my digital camera image cards. The ASUS does this quite well. I just returned from eight days in the back country of Canyonlands with over 30GB of images backed up to the PC and to a USB powered portable hard drive that copied them from the PC. I turned off the wireless and reduced the display brightness whenever I used the PC, and I still had 50% of the battery life remaining when the helicopter came to pick us up.
I see that ASUS now has the 1000H with a 160GB hard drive. I actually replaced the 80GB drive with a new 120GB that I already had. Today I would buy the 160GB hard drive. All this in a tiny machine that costs less than $500. My other consideration was the new Epson P7000 for $700, but it was not available for this trip and it could not copy images to a portable hard drive.

I really like the larger 10in screen. I saw a 9 in and it is too small to read. The 80gig hard drive great! I replaced the 1gig ram with 2 gig ram chip and after resetting the cmos memory I have 2 gig ram.
The battery life is a solid 5 hours. The keyboard is easy to type on.
I love the bluetooth, as I added a bluetooth mouse.
The screen is very bright. The only small item is the sound is not terrible loud, I have had to use earbuds in a pinch.

Hey all!
As a product of the computer generation, my recommendation is for those of the under-40 crowd.
I am 5'8 and in no way does this feel cumbersome because the keyboard design is the same as any other keyboard.
Seriously, a fully loaded laptop that weighs half as much as a regular Dell notebook.
This netbook is dope!
You have a screen that is as clear as my dad's flat screen but small enough that you don't have to be concerned about space. Whether you're sharing a mini table at Starbuck's or on the train(make sure to put a notebook underneath so that the filters don't suffocate).
There is a built in web cam so you can face-to-face chat online for free through Skype(already installed)!
The hybrid engine makes everything quick and easy.
I am so happy with my purchase...hopefully I can use this to influence the department of education to give these to children in diverse neighborhoods so that each child can catch up with the rest of the country.
There's no excuse, they can get twice as many for the price they pay now.
