Refreshingly Innovative July 20, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Kudos to Amazon for a great product. I am extremely happy with the Kindle I purchased. It was well designed and makes reading all the more enjoyable. It exceeded my expectations. It performs well and will satisfy any book lover. The common complaints i have heard about the Kindle don't deserve to be called issues at all. They are all matters of mere convenience that, if addressed, will make the Kindle that much better and easier to use. With intent in mind, amazon hit the mark with this one. I highly recommend it.
Traditional book junkie --> Kindle convert July 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I received a Kindle as a gift about a month ago, and have been completely converted. Which is saying a lot, as I love physical books.
The Kindle addresses my biggest phobia ever: being stuck in a hotel room late at night with NOTHING TO READ but the Bible in the drawer.
I've read lots of complaints about the hardware design, and they just don't matter; the design may not be as instantly cool as the iPod, but it is functional and doesn't get in the way of the content. So much so, that I find myself sometimes scrabbling at the top corner to turn the page with my finger, as if it were a real book.
The cover is rubbish, however, and I'll be replacing it soon. There isn't anyplace to hold the Kindle; I've seen a third-party cover that provides a right-thumb 'landing' margin, which will greatly improve the reading experience.
There is a lot of free content available, and the download process from Amazon is fantastically quick and reasonably priced. I'd like a better search function for the Kindle store, i.e. search with multiple criteria (genre + subgenre + price + publication year + ...). And I'm hoping the library of available books for Kindle continues to expand.
I have had a PDA (I'm on my second HTC) for years and have tried to read e-books on that, but it just doesn't work as a reader. Ditto reading books on a laptop ... you just can't take a laptop to bed with you.
Battery life is very good. I might wish for a backlight option for reading in the dark, but then of course the battery life would suffer. A booklight works pretty well with the Kindle.
The web browser is a bonus. It isn't a great interface for web browsing, but fine for a quick lookup to answer a question out of what you've just read, without having to remember to go onto the web and look it up later, as with a paper book.
All in all, I give the Kindle 9 out of 10.
Kindle is great a lot more than I expected July 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wasnt sure what to expect when I tried this device out. I love reading but the piles of books in my closet is a down side. So when i seen that this device instantly provides you with book and there no physicall product to take up room I thought i had to have it. I have used audiobooks and other ebooks on the palm pilot and it wasnt great. I waited a long time to purchase the Kindle, kept checking out the page, then it was backordered for months, thne I finally bought mine a week ago. I LOVE IT!!! It is so easy to use expect for a little minor quirks which i will get into in the pros and cons. It was well worth purchasing, yes the price was high which can be a downfall especailly if a newer version comes out with newer features, but maybe Amazon can provide a update to people who purchased version 1, like the ipod touch allows users to upgrade for a small fee. I love my Kindle and I am sure you will too!! Pros and cons follow since nothing is perfect.
PROS: Looks like ur reading a real book, no strain on eyes Instant delivery of books no waiting for shipping or heavy books Lets you read material before you buy it Battery last for a really long time Can adjust text size, tell me what book lets u do that. Saves ur spot, no losing pages Progress tracker so you know how far you gotten
CONS: Wish there was somekind of built in light Book cover is kind of hard to get the Kindle to stay into Next page button on R side kind of gets in the way when trying to handle the Kindle, easily hit and can change the pages you are reading. Wish there was a easier way to flip through pages to go back to look ahead or back to table of contents.
Ready for prime time, but could still be improved. July 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Let's cut to the chase! Here are the 9 things that I find that make my Amazon Kindle great:
1) It connects wirelessly at EVDO speeds without contracts or fees or computer connections right out of the box. 2) Therefore, newspapers get delivered automatically before I wake up and you can buy almost any book you want and instantly start reading it. Prices seem to be cheaper too than buying paperback. 3) Something called "E-ink" technology makes it look like you're reading paper so there's no eye strain like on an LCD. The kindle is easily read in direct sunlight. 4) You can carry all your reading material with you in one concise package. More luggage room/less shoulder pain! 5) You can save trees. 6) It's about the size of a DVD jacket. 7) Super easy to use dictionary: just move the scroll wheel to the **line** with the word you want to look up (you don't even have to highlight the word itself), click the scroll wheel, and the definitions of the major words in that line pop up. 8) Incredible battery life (E-ink only uses batteries to change the screen, not to maintain it).
9) Here's the kicker and the reason why I bought it: you can already find tons of books in any genre on the Internet for free without using Amazon. Although you have to convert first the files you download, it's very easy to do. 1. D/L MobiCreator (free) 2. Click Import PDF 3. Click Build 4. Drag file to Kindle. Takes 10-20 sec total time to convert.
Here are cons: 1) You can't read during take off or landing. 2) It's still a 1st gen product, so graphics are not too good yet. IBD newspaper suffers from this (but not WSJ newspaper). 3) You can't leave it alone at the coffee shop, duffle bag, backpack or it will be gone when you get back. 4) Price - it's $360 (ouch) but that covers the wireless connection too and will come down. 5) A new version with a smaller form factor is rumored to come out in October 2008. 6) Yes, the big buttons on the side make it hard to not press on accident. 7) Yet another gadget to carry.
Nonetheless, I only wish I had all my med school textbooks on something like this (Kindle can't do this yet either)! In the end, the Kindle is an extreme convenience - so much convenience that you will be able to read many new books you never thought of reading - simply because 1) you don't have to go to the store to find and carry big, bulky books that end up cluttering your house and 2) also because of the free downloadable content on the Internet.
Verdict: If you're traveling soon and don't want to carry tons of reading material, I'd get one. If not, I'd wait for the smaller form factor Kindle that's supposedly coming out.
I hope you find this review helpful. Thanks for reading.
No regrets at all!!! July 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This a fantastic product. I have another e-reader but the abililty to download books right from the Kindle makes this product so much better. It is very easy to understand and use. Easy to read indoors or out. It was well worth the money I spent on it. I love having so many books right in the one little device. I still will buy regular books but I am running out of room to store them so the Kindle is great.
