5 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper   July 3, 2008

I purchased a Sony KDL 37M4000 after doing quite a bit of research on 720p LCD TVs. It was the largest size that would fit an existing cabinet, and I'm not a gamer, so I didn't need the 1080p XBR6 for quite a bit more money. I have it hooked up to a Comcast HD Cable Box and a Sony PS3 Gamestation for Blu-Ray discs.

The picture is excellent, particularly in the vivid mode for sports and concerts. It can also easily be calibrated using the remote menu settings to give you exactly what you may be looking for. The blu-ray discs are fabulous at 1080i, but frankly, the Standard Definition DVDs show almost as well at 480p. Also, contrary to what I've read about some LCD TV's, the viewing angle is extremely broad; there is not a significant loss of content from anywhere in the room where the TV is located. I am using component video inputs rather than HDMI inputs, and I have purchased a couple of HDMI connectors which I will eventually use just to see if there's any difference, but the display with component inputs is wonderful. If there is any drawback at all, it's that I can't use the TV remote or cable remote for the PS3 player, but that is a minor quibble indeed. I'd recommend this TV to anyone who wants one for around $1100.00 out the door.

2 out of 5 stars suprisingly bad performer   June 18, 2008

I purchased it somehow mislead by other Sony Bravia reviews.I even bought 3 year extended warranty, since I was convinced this is a good TV.I sold my 42" Visio plasma TV, since it was too big for my bedroom and since it was plasma, too "hot" in terms of power consumption and heating effect I was getting in my bedroom (Florida).I sold it to my friend and boy, I really am sorry now!The picture quality of this 37 inch Bravia is a shame. First of all the lack of decent black levels showing the picture as it would be a watching through "milky cloud" - I'm unable to get a balanced contrast/brightness level. It's either to milky or the contrast is blown out of balance.
Also, colors are unnatural.Since the blacks or dark colors are showing cloudy too, it' easy to notice all digital artifacts that are associated with a compressed imaging coming from cable television (and I really do have excellent TV signal, coming from Verizon FIOS TV digital box).
It's very modest to say, that getting this TV 2 stars out of five is generous rating.
Overall lousy performance, washed out colors, poor contrast and impossible to get balanced picture.
The only good this TV is doing for me is not heating my bedroom...since I'm not watching it almost at all.
Buyers Beware!I would love to replace it...
