Horrible External CD ROM November 18, 2008 You would have thought that the CD ROM was perfected by now, but you were wrong about this item. It does not work with Windows and I have trouble on Linux too. It just spins and spins and never does anything. DO NOT BUY. Just spend the extra $20 and get a decent external dvd-rom instead.
cheap and good solution October 27, 2008 It works out of the box and it uses USB power - no transformer. A cheap solution to keep the old notebook that has a broken CD-ROM drive working.
I Gambled and Lost October 27, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this drive to upload software to a netbook. The drive came before the netbook, so I connected the drive to my desktop Mac. It recognized the drive but failed to successfully read the disk either under OS X or Parallels. I, wistfully, hoped that the drive was simply incompatible with Apple products.
When my netbook arrived, I connected the drive. The NB recognized the first disk I put in, but failed to read it. I then inserted my installation disk for MS Office 07. No luck. It would not read it.
Frankly, the drive is a finicky piece of crap. It was just $20, so I don't feel too bad about the purchase, but I clearly should have gone in a differ direction.
The denouement of the story is that the NB connects nicely to a Parallels based network. You can then install any software using the DVD/CD drive running under Parallels.
Perfect October 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Worked perfectly right out of the box. Plugged it in and my computer instantly "saw" it. No software needed. Just plug and play. I bought this to replace a finicky drive on my CPU and this solution is DRAMATICALLY cheaper.
