A few things to consider March 14, 2010 Michael J. Drouillard (Grand Rapids, MI United States) First of all, I really like this printer. It was surprisingly easy to set up on my XP, Vista & Windows 7 systems, as well as setting up the wireless ascpect. I was truly surprised on the latter! I had been an HP printer fan for over 15 years until I got a Canon PIXMA Pro9000. Don't get me wrong, I love HP, but Canon seemed more economical as far as ink cost and printer cost. I do photography, so I rely on these printers to do an outstanding job. The Pro9000 is awesome, so I decided to get something that I could use for printing through my wireless network and scan things. So far I am quite happy with the 990.
However, there are two issues I had:
1) Ink useage - now I've only had this printer for a little over 2 months. I've printed things here-and-there, but not a whole lot, and none of it has been photo printing (that job belongs mainly with the Pro9000-with which I've not had a problem with drying out even over long periods of time). Some of my cartridges are already half used up according to the printer status info. I've accepted that many printers deal with drying out of cartridges over time, but that's usually 6 months or longer. To have a cartridge half empty (or half full, if you prefer) within 2 months is a little irritating. I have already purchased backup cartridges for when I replace them. We'll see how things go. So, my advice on this is to print regularly, and have backup ink.
2) I ordered this from Adorama Camera through Amazon, as I could not beat the price. It shipped pretty quick and before I knew it, I had a note on my door that they tried to deliver it. Doesn't sound like a negative, does it? Well, I called UPS's 800# and asked if they could pull it from the truck so that I could pick it up. I was told that the seller does not allow that option. Your options are: 1) be home for delivery (hard to do when you are working when UPS delivers, and the shipping address could not be changed), 2) sign for it so that it relieves them of all responsibility if someone should steal it off of your porch or 3) return it. I was not happy with any of these options. UPS told me to contact Adorama because it was their policy, and they could possibly release it to be held. Upon calling Adorama, I was told that I had to contact Amazon because it was their policy. The woman at Adorama warned me that Amazon would tell me that it was Adorama's problem. This was correct. So now I was caught in the middle of this and was ready to just return it. UPS happened to call me about another package I was having held for pick up while I was on hold with Amazon (rep was checking with manager). The person at the local UPS facility said that they would pull both packages for pick up, and that it was not their policy to hold onto items like that. So, be prepared to deal with some red tape in some cases. If it weren't for UPS's local facility, it might have hurt any further business I'd have with Amazon. And I do a lot of business with them.
All-in-all, I do recommend this printer. I've yet to explore it's potential, but I'm quite happy with it so far.
Canono wireless printer March 11, 2010 Tilo J. Haas The printer was easy to set up and does excellently what I bought it for. A bit noisy and a bit slow but does a very good job and the print is very, very good. I use it for a PC, a Mac and Ubuntu. Works without a hitch.
The Canon MP990 meets my needs perfectly March 6, 2010 R. Bishop (Nashville, TN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For my needs this has been an excellent purchase at an outstanding price through Amazon.
I began shopping several months ago for a printer to replace a very old HP deskjet for three primary reasons:
1. All-in-one capabilities (document print/copy/scan/fax) - This printer does all of these very well for me. There is no built-in fax, but I do not have a land phone-line in the house. I can accomplish the fax function by using the scanner, then using an on-line service to fax. This may or may not be acceptable to you, but I knew this going into the purchase and am fine with this approach.
2. "Closing the Loop" on digital photography - over the last few years, I have become a serious amateur digital photographer. In general, I do not think that printing at home is more cost effective than using a local lab or on-line service to get prints (and what I have seen of ink consumption for this printer so far has reenforced this belief). I also do not expect to be able to match the output quality of the pros at my local camera shop. That said, the photo printing capabilities of this printer do allow me to match the quality of the local Walgreens for prints up to 8x10. And most importantly, for a very low price has enabled me to learn a great deal about color correction, print resolutions, etc. The immediate feedback provided by the high-quality prints from this printer has allowed me to experiment in near real-time and has really helped me improve my overall photography. For the few pictures I take that I will want the very highest quaility output for (or sizes larger than 8x10), I will go to the local camera shop for pro treatment (after doing a test print on this printer). If I need a large number of prints made, will likely head to Walgreens or use an online service to save cost. For everything else, this printer does a fine job for me.
3. Wireless capabilities - I do most of my office and photo work on a laptop, and generally prefer to work in a room in the house far from where the printer sits. I found wireless extremely easy to set up. I am running Windows Vista.
I did some comparison shopping, and picked this printer over the Epson near-equivalent due primarily to the excellent on-line reviews and the execellent low price of this Canon (when factoring in the significant rebate offered). Can't say I wouldn't have been equally happy with the Epson, but I can very highly recommend this printer if your needs are similar to mine.
One general note (and I suspect that this may be true for any brand/model of printer you buy if you are new to printing digital photographs): I am still working on understanding color correction (what you see on the screen = what you get from the printer). I am using photoshop elements 7, and by lots of reading and tweaking settings in multiple application windows am getting to the point were I am able somewhat repeatedly to get acceptably close to my amateur eye. Expect to spend some time with this.
Good but could be better March 5, 2010 npanxx 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a good printer but could be a REALLY good printer. I used to have a MP970 but I gave it to my daughter and bought the 990. For some unfathomable reason they took the button off the control panel that allows you to switch from front paper feed to rear paper feed. Now you have to go through a complicated series of menu items, if you can find them, to do the same thing you used to be able to do with the push of a button.
I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.6 and MS Office for Mac. I have not been able to install the on-screen users manual.
Finally, the printer doesn't support WPA/WPA2 encryption if you want to go wireless. Since I'm unwilling to reconfigure my wireless network, I had to go with the wired configuration.
Not Up to Expectations February 24, 2010 J. Funderburgh 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Advantages:
A very clean look that matches my new iMac beautifully. Great place for a coffee cup.
The scanner is fast and produces very high quality images.
Ink installation and setup no problem. Utility programs work well. Advantage: It will warn you but continue to print until the ink cartridges are totally empty, unlike some other printers. The screen is good and the little wheel control is only moderately annoying.
Text printing fast and clean. Duplex works well but really slows things. Quirk: If duplex is selected and you print only one sheet, it still turns the page over and thinks about things for 30 or 40 seconds before giving you your page. No hassel driver download from the web.
No comments: WiFi or SD card use.
Disadvantages:
Quality of color image printing on plain paper is way below what I get from a HP7580.
Speed is modest at best. Can be ridiculously slow. A 20 page magazine article with two color figures printed at "better" image quality on both sides took 17 mins.
But who is in a hurry- it looks good.
