Excellent Computer November 19, 2009 Jack Smith (Ca United States) Love it. Light, long battery life, and fast. Only complaint is that I still haven't received my Windows 7 upgrade.
Gateway laptop November 12, 2009 Thomas Struble Great turn around time on my order. Product arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect shape. It works as advertised and no problems found with it to date. Good company to do business with.
Cheap junk November 8, 2009 Jami Dwyer I bought this a month ago from Best Buy, and the SD card reader is already physically broken (the card doesn't click into place or spring back out). I'm careful, but I do use it every day. Apparently 30 uses was too many. It's too late to return it to Best Buy, so I guess I'm going to see how my Gateway warranty works out.
Besides the deal-breaker of hardware that breaks after a month, I don't like the mouse. It takes serious pressure to push it down, and it makes an extremely loud click sound. The keyboard and mousepad are gigantic, maybe awesome for massive man hands, but not good at all for little lady hands. I don't like the touch-screen-everything fad, and the Wi-Fi, volume, and mouse lock controls are on this little touchscreen thingie above the keyboard. One thing I did like is that the power button is cat-proof, hidden away at the side under the screen. But now my cats can lock my mouse, turn off my Wi-Fi, and mute my sound with a single well-placed paw.
I do like the numeric keypad and wide screen, but I didn't imagine they still made laptops this heavy. It feels like my Toshiba from 5 years ago.
Spend the extra hundred or two hundred bucks and get something pleasant to use that will last!
Is there any rating lower than a one? No zero? No negatives? October 20, 2009 J. Chaffee 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The notebook looks cool. That is about all the good I can say about it. Their tech support seems to exist only to convince you how hopeless it is to try and fix your computer.
The support staff can not only speak no English, they are also almost completely clueless how to troubleshoot a computer. I get that you can save money by outsourcing to India: a lot of companies do it well with great results. Hiring an eleven year old kid who grew up in a cave in Afghanistan? Not as good of an idea.
My notebook had power issues. I plug it in, nothing happens. I am an Electrical Engineer and know a thing or two about power supplies, so I reinstall the drivers and test the power cord. Everything is good, so the solder probably broke off of the power jack. Nothing too serious, I send it back, they resolder it and return it.
That is what I explained to the customer service rep. Him: Have you tried a secondary cord? Me: No, don't have one, but the first one tested good. Him: What kind of tests? Me: Digital multimeter and Oscilloscope. It all came back within the rated voltages. Him: Oh, okay. Have you tried a secondary cord? Me: Ummm..... I just explained that I tested the cord and it worked... Him: Thank you sir for your efforts. What kind of tests? Me: Digital multimeter and Oscilloscope. They all came back within the rated tolerances. Him: What did they come back as? Me: Within rated tolerances. Him: At 19 Volts? Me: Yes. Him: May I suggest using a secondary cord? Me: I have explained already that I tested the cord and it is good. Him: yes, but did you test it with a digital multimeter? Me: yes, if you go back to the earlier part of our chat you will see what the results were. Him: Oh. Thank you. What were they? Me: 19Volts, well within rated tolerances. Him: I wonder if it could be a broken solder joint... Have you tried using a secondary cord? Me: Is there anyone there with any kind of electronics experience? Him: Sorry. Me: Any manager? Him: I am sorry, no.
Now imagine waiting seven to eight minutes between each reply. And now imagine doing this straight for an hour and a half before being booted off of the system, nothing resolved.
bad product, good service October 19, 2009 Won Uk Jo (Stanford, CA) This laptop is one of the cheapest laptop with fast cpu and large memory. The thing is that you get what you paid for.I bought this for my brother and the integrated network card had some problem. it keeps freezing the computer with blue screen, and he had to reboot it every 30mins or so. even though my brother dumped all the boxes and stuff, amazon was willing to take the return. now I don't trust Gateway, but trust Amazon's service.
