And the LED backlight technology is 33 percent more energy efficient than standard CCFL LCD screens. Newly designed from the ground up, the Intel Atom Z520 uses a 45nm (nanometer) design structure with new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--to conserve even more energy and give you more time away from the wall outlet. The Intel Atom Z520 provides a 1.3 GHz CPU speed with a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 512 KB L2 cache--which uses just 2 watts of power. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) It supports Intel's 64-bit computing architecture, which can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory with compatible 64-bit software, as well as Intel's Hyper-Threading technology for speedier multitasking. | A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more. Love, Love, Love this Netbook! November 21, 2009 Mark Lovelace (San Antonio, TX.) I've had this little netbook for one month now and I love it. No freezes, no problems, just easy to use and a long, long battery life. I followed the instructions and did 3 complete charge-discharge cycles, and now I get between 7 and 8 hours of battery life. Awesome!
We like this netbook, but . . . November 20, 2009 John Currahee (Georgia, USA) We like this netbook. It was shipped and received quickly and arrived in good condition, from RCS, through Amazon.
It arrived on 1 November and we put it into operation immediately. It functions beautifully on our wireless home network. We have been very pleased to find that its battery life exceeds 8 hours.
But, on 16 November, the display started behaving strangely. The normal blue background color on startup became red, with some circles and other artifacts. Everything we looked at seemed almost solarized, with lots of pink and red overtones. We like the red color of the netbook case, but we did not expect the display to follow the same color scheme. Except for the display anomalies, the system continued to work very well.
I am reasonably computer savvy, so I tried all the things that might conceivably affect the display properties. Removing the battery and using only the AC adapter did not change anything. Starting up in safe mode changed nothing. There were no driver problems, etc.
So, we went online on another computer, to the Acer website and entered the appropriate information--we had already registered the netbook with Acer--; I was in the process of e-mailing Acer's customer service to get some help, when the site told me a customer service chat was available. We quickly verified that the problem lay with the monitor of the netbook and that there was nothing we could do on our end. The chat technician quickly provided us with a prepaid FEDEX shipping number and detailed packaging instructions for returning the unit to them in Temple, TX. We were advised that it would be repaired and returned within 7 to 10 business days of the date they received it. Today, we had an e-mail telling us that they have received it. Now, we will wait and see when it gets back to us.
Basically, this seems to be a good product, well worth the cost, and we are--so far--well impressed with Acer's customer service.
Assuming that the unit gets back to us pretty soon and the problem is solved, we would not hesitate to recommend this product.
Better than Dell Mini 10 November 18, 2009 YG (San Diego, CA USA) I already have a Dell Mini 10 white, 1366x768, so the text is very tiny. This cool red one's screen is 1.6 inch bigger with the same resolution, so viewing is much more comfortable than the Dell. The Dell Mini 10 gets hot quite easily, and this Acer is the same but just a little less hot, maybe due to the slight larger size. I bought a large battery, but size and weight don't matter. I strongly recommend you to buy large battery, just about $20-$30 more. The big downside is the power adaptor's cable. The adaptor itself is quite small, but the cable to the outlet is very thick and takes a lot of storage when carrying in a bag. To make it clear, 110V wall outlet --- thick cable --- adaptor --- thin cable --- laptop. I can't understand why the thick cable is necessary. The Dell Mini 10 doesn't have the thick cable, like cell phone chargers, 110V wall outlet --- adaptor --- thin cable --- laptop, so it is quite handy. That is why I rated 4 starts, since it really hurts the netbook's mobility.
Value Laptop - Performance at par with expectations November 16, 2009 Kaustuv Dasgupta (New York, NY) I bought this laptop as a 2nd laptop in the house, primarily for surfing the web. For that role, this is a really handy laptop. It is light, ultra-portable and delivers adecent performance. Downside is a rather sluggish start and the zoom tool on the touchpad needs a getting used to. Overall a good purchase that delivers exactly what was expected of it.
great deal November 14, 2009 K. Manigault (SOUTH CAROLINA) I love this netbook. It's great for a take along. It's not as fast as the bigger notebooks, but fast enough for email and surfering the web. The battery life is great. It last five hours plus. I have only used it a little over five hours without charging and it charges up within a hour. The type keys are flat, which I love.
