And the LED backlight technology is 33 percent more energy efficient than standard CCFL LCD screens. Newly designed from the ground up, the Intel Atom Z520 uses a 45nm (nanometer) design structure with new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--to conserve even more energy and give you more time away from the wall outlet. The Intel Atom Z520 provides a 1.3 GHz CPU speed with a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 512 KB L2 cache--which uses just 2 watts of power. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) It supports Intel's 64-bit computing architecture, which can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory with compatible 64-bit software, as well as Intel's Hyper-Threading technology for speedier multitasking. | A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more. The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse. |

Great for price, but it FREEZES! November 22, 2009 K. Lyle (CA) Love the size of the netbook... perfect. Keyboard is full-sized with the 11.6" Acer, which is a big reason I got it over the 10.1". Only problem so far (I've had it a month) is that it freezes constantly for NO reason. I'm always rebooting. Called Amazon within a week of receiving it... wanted an exchange.. and they were already unavailable from Amazon. So.. I could've sent it back for a refund but would then have had to pay more for a replacement, since I'd have had to get it from another one of their vendors. I've just hung on to it, hoping more would show up online. No such luck as of yet. I may end up sending it in to Acer (since my 30 days are nearly up) for fixing... I've heard this happens with this computer, and it's the hard drive.
Otherwise, it's a good little computer.
Excellent Productivity Tool November 21, 2009 Alexander D. Richards (Dallas, TX) I was hesitant about this purchase because I knew an updated line of net-books was in the near future. But I am glad I purchased the much needed machine.
The good things: It is very light and portable without making any of the sacrifices commonly associated with net-books (screens that are too small, cramped keyboards, etc.), and its battery life is incredible.
The not-so-good things: I've heard many different comments regarding the loud fan, and my net-book seems to fall between the good and bad. When plugged in, the fan stays on constantly and whines. I found a quick fix for this, however, with an application called "Acer Aspire One Fan Control", which is a free utility that allows you to set the fans to turn on only when the CPU reaches a certain temperature, and, likewise, to turn off when the CPU reaches the cooling point temperature. When running on battery power, though, the fan remains off unless you begin streaming youtube content, or hulu.
Ah yes, Hulu, bringing me to my next qualm with this product: it will play hulu videos, but if you want to watch without frame stutter, you must use the "pop-out" feature and close all other open windows. A full screen experience is out of the question (A shame considering the wonderful quality of the LCD LED display). Many people make the mistake of blaming the CPU for this hitch. Such blame is true to a degree, but the real culprit lies in Adobe's Flash software which doesn't make use of the GMA 500 graphics chip to decode and play the streaming video content; consequently, the meager 1.33ghz atom chip must bear the brunt of the task. A software update in the future could reverse this and, I think, please many net-book users. Youtube, however, plays fine.
Although this review seems overloaded with the not-so-good, I still rate this little machine a four star product for its productive uses. I'm a college student who does a great deal of writing in my courses, and such a portable, energizer-bunny of a laptop suits my needs perfectly. I'm sure if you take copious notes in class and need a machine that will last the whole long day on a single charge and want keep the price below $300, than this machine will shine.
It serves basic multimedia purpose well, and if you don't place desktop-class expectations on it, you won't be disappointed.
Cheers.
Don't buy this November 20, 2009 R. Galvan (Tx) I got the netbook in a Friday, I tried to use it on Monday and it had an error. The operative system was not working.
I spent more time waiting for it than using it. I hate Acer... :(
Too slow, poor webcam November 17, 2009 Big Willie This little computer is just too slow. The processor can't keep up with normal web-browsing - so slow it is frustrating. The webcam doesn't work well - the video is grainy and the webcam stops working every few minutes on Skype. Save your $$$ for something more powerful.
Naysayers it's time to believe! Win 7 better than XP on netbooks! November 15, 2009 A. Nichols (Lehigh Valley, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just bought this netbook about 4 weeks ago and who says it cant run Vista or Windows 7?
I am sick of the Open Source Commie crew of capitalist hating Mircorsoft bashers and all their BS....
IN FACT.... Because the GMA 500 graphics in this netbook is capable of running DriectX 10 it actaully runs better with Vista than Xp and when you upgrade to Windows 7 it really shines having a noticable improvement when doing things like watching Flash vidos online! I know this because I used it for a wekk with XP, then installed a spare copy of Windows Vista Home Premium I had and after Windows 7 came out I bought a copy and tried it too. So I base this info on first hand real world testing. Will it replace a full size laptop? NO, yet no one ever said a netbook would....
For info on how to install Windows Vista or Windows 7 with a flash drive see this web page from Microsoft Tech Net with a how to video..

Now with that said, This netbook is my favorite portable that I have ever owned dating back to the mid 90's and my first notbook an NEC with Win 95. Is it the most powerful? Again No, so keep that in mind and if you do not have a desktop or full sized laptop I would not reccomend buying ANY netbook as your main computer. With that said, this thing is like an extension of myself and it's with me for most of the day. Fist thing in the moringin I use it to surf and listen to my local AM talk radio show. After that I throw it in my electricans bag, take off for the day and use if for anything from reading E Books and PDF files in the field, to watching youtube videos. Keep in mind it does get a little bogged down when watching video but that is comparing it to a 2.16 Mhz dual core Pentium Laptop or my Quad Core desktop.
Battery life is the reason I bought model and this is where it really shines!
This netbook really does provide all day computiing without a cord and from a fully charged battery it lasts from the time I get up in the morning till the time come home for dinner in the evening. In fact one day I did my own test, while doing some renovations to my bathroom. I used it to listen to Americas Anchorman on my favorite local talk radio station from a little after Noon till 3PM, followed by Hannity from 3-6PM, then my local guy from 6-7PM streaming over the internet with speakers at almost full volume. In total it lasted about 6 1/2 hrs under theese condtions with some battery to spare....
