Great Little Notebook November 18, 2009 J. J. Rodriguez (Tampa, Fl.) I love my new notebook. The battery life is excellent I keep checking and can't believe that I still have so much battery lefe left. We live in a 2 story house with the main computer upstairs so this saves me a lot of trips upstairs. Only drawback is you can't open excel or word documents but I knew that when I purchased it so I have to live with it! You can't have everything.
Love it so far. I'm happy November 13, 2009 S&H (Dix Hills, NY USA) Over the years I've become pretty good with computers although I would NOT place myself in the guru category. I was looking for something small and easy to carry. I did the research and the Samsung N110 kept coming up with great reviews. Well, I'm adding on my 5 stars.
The netbook is well constructed. Solid. Sleek. The viewing screen looks clean and crisp to my eyes. I have big hands and it was critical that I could type easily and feel the buttons. The keyboard is well constructed and and I can type without a problem. Sure, it took a little practice and I had to adjust to reach the shift button but this was a non-issue. I like the easy blue labelled function button that helps you check battery strength, adjust volume, etc. Well layed out. I had NO issues with booting, setup, etc.
The Samsung comes with a recovery system installed. Automatically recognizes WiFi and alerts you to secure and insecure connections. Google Chrome works well and with a good connection, it connects as fast as my desktop. It has adaptors for Ethernet, media cards, 3 USB ports (2 on the same side), HDMI, ear phones, mic and also has a PC cam.
If you are going to buy this, don't forget that you may need/want to add an optical drive (DVD/CD-R). Add-on's are something to consider when weighing whether or not to purchase a laptop vs. netbook. I purchased the Samsung SE-S804. I loaded the Nero Software on there and it works fine. Again, if you need all the bells and whistles and budget and size are not an issue, you may want to purchase a laptop.
No issues using the track pad either, my big fingers and all. After about 2 hours of use so far, my battery life is at 65%. It charges quickly. I don't see any need to order cooling fans since the netbook doesn't seem to get excessively hot.
There is a ton of freeware to add that you can download that uses up less space than some of the programs that come preloaded (bloatware can be deleted). I am already using OpenOffice for word processing which works well.
Final notes. I ordered my netbook from Newegg. Sadly, Amazon charges are higher although I love Amazon's service. My netbook came with a free mouse. A recommended purchase that comes up on the screen is a Case Logic neoprene case. Uh....nice but hardly ANY storageCase Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve (Black). I'm sorry I purchased it. Look for something with pockets to store your power cord, surge protector, optical drive, etc. Some Targus bag's look good.
a wonderful change November 13, 2009 Sad eyes (DC) I've had a lot of laptops, but this one (SO FAR) has been the best. Yes, there's no cd/dvd drive built in. Once you've accepted that: its fast, light, keyboard is nearly standard, and the battery life a HUGE improvement from the typical laptop. I'd buy another today if I had the need.
OK, but previous model was better November 13, 2009 Michael in NY 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Compared to the earlier NC10 from Samsung, the N110 is a big step down in quality. The build quality on the NC10 was much higher, the N110 is made of cheap flimsy plastic. Also, the NC10 had a matte finish on the screen, the N110 is glossy.
Perfect for its purpose November 9, 2009 Pathfinder 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I rarely write reviews, but felt I could add a little to what the other reviewers have said. I've been using this unit for two weeks, most recently at a week-long conference which took place indoors with occasional outdoor use.
There are two things about this little netbook that take some getting used to.
1. The glossy screen
2. The track pad / mouse pad button
As for the glossy screen, it can be a major distraction for some people. It is very noticeable when you pay attention to it. What I found is that it "disappeared" as I just focused on the application I was using and stopped looking at the reflections. Your attention to the application makes the glossy effect a non-issue - at least in my case. And this worked outside as well as inside. You can adjust the brightness and/or tilt the screen to mitigate most of it too. In other words if you can't help but stare at the reflections, then try to find a netbook with a matte screen.
The track pad is ok. It's on the small side but for me the button took getting used to. It's a single long button that you press on the left side for left-click and right side for right-click. I found it annoying at first to right-click, so I found myself using the keyboard context button more. This button is the right-click equivalent of the mouse.
All in all, this netbook is well built, feels very solid, has amazing battery life (I easily went all day using wireless and MS Office applications) and still had 50% battery left at the end of 6 hours. I would definitely buy this again without question. This Samsung doesn't have any of the issues other brands have. For example, the power supply overheating / charging issue in Asus. This power supply brick is slightly warm to the touch after charging from 10% battery. On top of that the power supply is really tiny compared to any others I've seen.
If you can remember that netbooks are really not laptops and that they have a different purpose, then I think you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is: Light weight, long battery life, compact and portable.
