avi resolution max out at 720x480 (480p)....why??? March 19, 2010 jdogg Overall this is a decent dvd player for the price. Got Best Buy to price match w/ Amazon. Purchased mainly for the USB front to play avi files. Find out that avi MAX resolution it can support is 720x480(480p). Cant play hi def avi movie format in 1280×720(720p) or 1920×1080(1080p). This is CHEESY! Of course there is upscaling but at least make it play 720p. PS3 play avi files in any format.
I recommend this dvd player for non lcd and maybe 32in or smaller lcd. Any lcd 40in or bigger even w/ upscale still a bit blurry IMO. I guess for the price cant expect too much.
Does not do Closed Caption over HDMI March 19, 2010 A. Altman (San Carlos, California United States) Obtaining closed caption over HDMI seems to be a widespread challenge (I'm just learning about this by searching various forums on the net). As far as I can tell, it is NOT an insurmountable challenge. This DVD player offers the CC via composite cabling, for example, in modest resolution. So it does gather the data and it COULD use it to craft a higher resolution (up-sampled) picture with CC in the picture to transmit via HDMI. But it does not. Sigh.
Works for me March 13, 2010 Gary O (PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
No idea why some are saying this is noisy. No problems whatsoever tied into my Samsung LCD. Quiet as a church mouse. Couldn't ask for a better player. Crisp, clean superb picture.
NO GOOD! March 9, 2010 Dcn. Tom (Lansing, MI) First problem: Player would 'default' to showing "Closed Captions" on some DVD's - have to return to Disc Menu to turn off CC and restart DVD.
Second problem: Picture would "freeze" - have to restart the DVD
I would like to give this player a "No-Star" rating since giving it one star might mean it has some usefulness - which it didn't.
Solution: Returning unit for a diferent brand.
ON THE PLUS SIDE: Amazon's total "hassel-free" policy to return the unit (as long as it was returned within the first 30 days)
STAY AWAY! March 5, 2010 Charles D. Lee (Phoenix, AZ) I got this DVD player as a replacement for my refurbished Samsung DVD1080P8, the previous years model. At around 60 days, the player had problems playing discs of all kids.
To make a long story short, it took me FOUR MONTHS of going back and forth and them sending me 2 other defective players before I got a NEW P9. Now, it's been less then six months (I'm guessing) and this NEW player has stopped paying audio.
Throughout this entire ordeal, most of the CS agents from two different companies (one Samsung and the other a contractor for Samsung) couldn't give a hoot that I have a Samsung 56" DLP HDTV, a Samsung $2000 fridge, and have owned nothing but Samsung cell phones for almost 15 years.
Now I'm on Samsung "Chat" hoping just how much teeth-pulling I have to endure to resolve this matter. Do yourself a favor and buy something else.
I have NEVER had such a bad overall customer service experience in my entire LIFE! No mattere how they resolve my problem this time, I will never forget it. If I don't get a satisfactory resolution TODAY, I'm buying a Sony.
