| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The SH-S222L drive is optimized for the PC upgrade market since it has a PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) interface. Although a majority of computers are shipped with a SATA interface, a significant portion of consumers with older computer models are looking to upgrade their slower drives. This PATA drive offers the speed of a leading-edge drive with the compatibility required for mature PC models. SH-S222L drive is equipped with LightScribe technology.

| Customer Reviews: Great DVD Drive, terrible software, no one takes responsibility! October 16, 2009 James Galyon 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased a SH-S222L Samsung DVD Writer to replace an older version SH-S182 DVD Writer that came bundled with Nero 6 software and ran great for 3 years to play DVDs on my computer. When the old drive finally wore out, I purchased the newer faster version SH-S222L that came with Nero 8 software. I installed the new SH-S222L drive easily and it ran flawlessly when tested using the existing Nero 6 software already on my computer. I then attempted to upgrade to the Nero 8, but at the beginning of the installation I was instructed to first completely uninstall the Nero 6 software using a Nero Clean. Nero Clean is a joke as it left numerous files, directories and register entries in my computer. After running it, I installed Nero 8, but there was no sound when I tried to play a DVD. I tried to reinstalled Nero 8, but as soon as the test DVD would start to spin, the screen would go black and the entire computer would freeze. I tried to uninstall Nero 8 and reinstall Nero 6, but still got no sound. I called Samsung who said it was obvious the problem was software related, and passed the buck to Nero. Samsung is usually one of the best when it comes to tech service, and the people even speak English as a first language. I agreed that it was software related, but when I attempted to contact Nero who I discovered they would only talk to me on the phone if I paid around like $1.25 per minute. They had email tech support , but took 5 days to respond and all they did was cut and paste info I had already read in their self help area. They were no help and their response hardly even related to the specific problem I was having with their software. Their info just instructed how to uninstall and reinstall the software, all the time boasting about how great their Nero Clean tool was. My conclusion is that Samsung is an excellent company with excellent products and tech service, but take no responsibility because they say they did not bundle Nero with their drive...Amazon did. Nero charges from day one for tech service and their email tech service is from Germany and beyond useless. I finally got the drive running by erasing everything Nero from my computer, and downloading and installing the free "K-LiteCodecPack510Full" codec package. My Windows Media Player now runs my DVDs flawlessly. I'll NEVER use Nero again! Nero 8 has major problems, tech service cost you from day one, and their response it at best, unresponsive. Get a Samsung drive, but buy different software. Amazon offered a refund, but I had to ask twice to get them to send the mailing label they promised. By then I had already figured it out myself. What a waste of time. If I had it to do all over again, I would have purchased from Newegg. Newegg backs their products 100% adn with no hassle.
Does what you need it to do October 2, 2009 B. Jen 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My little brother installed this thing and it was his first time doing it. He got it right and my mom started burning stuff right off the bat.
Adequate DVD burner/player, but not great September 13, 2009 photoGal (Milwaukee, WI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Received and installed this internal IDE DVD burner recently. Was disappointed to find out that there is no input/output connection for our special sound card, so the sound employs the default sound system on the CPU's motherboard. Sound does not work with Windows Media Player but the Nero software provided with the device works for playing a DVD, but it stalls at chapter changes. If anyone has any suggestions for making this perform better on a Pentium 4, WinXP 160GB, 2 MB RAM system, I'd welcome any input.
***OEM item*** April 29, 2009 J. Clemence (Kennewick, Wa USA) 10 out of 24 found this review helpful
Just to let anyone else know, this Samsung DVD burner (ASIN: B001JNY9DQ) is an OEM drive with a driver/software disc only.
The product page does not say one way or another if this is retail or OEM.
you can buy the drive from another trusted source for the same exact model drive for $7 cheaper and get free standard shipping.

Just be aware before clicking buy on this item.
So, giving 3 stars on this product, due to the bad info/incomplete info that amazon.com provided.
Hopefully the drive it self will work just fine.
I will update my review if I have any actual problems with the drive.
