external hard drive November 20, 2009 M. Strean (NJ) I haven't actually checked that the hard drive is copying all the data, but assume it is. It gives comfort, and maybe that's worth having it.
Products works and a good value November 20, 2009 Paul Rosal (Philadelphia, PA) Easy install because of USB, just plug in a you're ready. Stylish case (brushed metal look). Quiet operation. This is my first external drive so it's hard to compare performance, but I have no complaints, it just works.
Good Drive, bad software November 20, 2009 Roger in Virginia (VA) Bought this drive after having owned a Smaller Maxtor backup drive. The drive works well so far but the backup software is bad news. Its complicated, not intuitive and difficult to use. The help functions are also lacking. I would not have bought it knowing that the software was so complicated to use. I wanted a simple backup and restore capability but also wanted to be able to backup individual files myself and run programs from it which it does.
Also I wanted to password protect the drive like my Maxtor software allows but you can only password protect the backups. Somewhat disappointed.
Sleek, easy, and NOISY November 20, 2009 Ross Greiner (Longmont, Colorado United States) Seems to be doing a good job with the massive amounts of data I am throwing at it. However, compared to my FIVE other external drives, including Maxtor, Seagate, and WD, it is hands down the noise champion. Sounds like how my desktop computer sounded when churning away in 1998. Loud, but affordable.
If you buy this, then buy a backup drive for THIS! November 20, 2009 Dr. Book Warm (New Jersey) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mine died about 4 months after installation. I have tried various things, including several disk-recovery software. Nothing worked. Even the disk would not show up in the software (or Disk Management). I contacted Iomega Support online, who promptly sent me a power supply, although I was sure that it was not a power-supply problem. When I contacted Support again, they finally decided to send me a replacement drive. Unlike most other companies I dealt with, it was not free. I had to pay them $25 for their Advance Shipment option. The replacement drive was received and installed.
A couple of other things.
1) The actual disk in the failed drive was a Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB SATA. Iomega only provided the cheap enclosure.
2) The enclosure is not stable. Because it is not tightly connected to the base, it can slides off easily. I have used a duct tape to secure mine.
