Amazon.com Product Description
Capture the far-off action of fast-paced sports or zoom in for an intimate portrait with the Canon EF 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens. The L-series lens offers an Image Stabilizer that provides up to four stops of shake correction--a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements, meanwhile, produces an excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. Add in a sturdy housing with water- and dust-proof construction and you have a lens that's both portable and high performing. Other details include an f/4 maximum aperture, a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that enables quick and quiet autofocusing, compatibility with circular polarizing filters, and a lightweight body. The lens carries a one-year warranty.

Canon EF 70-200mm f4L USM lens

Product Description
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens offers the highest possible optical quality with no change in aperture over the full focal range of the lens. This allows photographers to set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom all the way through to 200mm without having to decrease shutter speed. Developed for use with a Canon SLR camera, this autofocus telephoto zoom lens offers optimized use with the Canon EOS series digital cameras. Of particular note, Canon has introduced an image stabilizer (IS) that adjusts to meet the demands of professional photography. IS reduces dramatically the image blur caused by camera shake. Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane. For shooting immobile subjects, Mode 1 corrects for movement in the image along both the horizontal and vertical axes. For shooting while panning horizontally to follow a moving subject, Mode 2 turns off vertical correction and prevents the effect of dragging the subject back through the frame. The lens' Ring-type USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. A powerful CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute to speed performance. The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM includes distance metering information, providing compatibility with the E-TTL II flash system of late model cameras such as the EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS 5D and EOS 400D. When used in conjunction with Canon's range of EX Speedlite flash units, the lens passes distance information to the flash algorithm for markedly improved flash exposure metering. Includes Lens hood and soft pouch

5 out of 5 stars Dan   November 1, 2009

This is the sharpest, fastest focusing zoom lens in Canon's lineup. If you don't need a larger aperture than f4 and the 70-200mm range suits your needs, you can't go wrong with this lens. It is tack sharp from 70 thru 200, has a 4 stop IS system, and produces perfect color rendition. Simply put, this is an awesome lens.

I have owned the 70-200mm f4 IS for a couple of years and this purchase was a gift for my son-in-law.

5 out of 5 stars Sports Review for this lens   October 29, 2009
T. M. Bappe (Ontario, Oregon)
If you want this lens for sports then you should read this. I've taken about 25,000-30,000 photos now of sports with this lens. It has functioned great for me the whole time. You can here the stabilizers kick on the instant the shutter button is pressed. This lens has great Bokeh at 4.0 when the subject is within 4 to 15 feet away and starts to taper off as the subject get further out but never the less great Bokeh and sharpness. I always have it at f4 during games. When taking sports photos in good full sun this lens does great. I have a Canon Rebel and usually keep my ISO at 100 in that kind of light with Aperture Priority Set and shutter speeds usually hit 500-2000/sec normal. Plenty fast to stop all action except maybe a hit baseball. When the sun starts going down it becomes a different matter all together. I find myself quicky turning up my ISO to compensate. Once the sun does go down completely and stadium lights come on, I have my ISO set to the highest at 1600. I also have to then switch to Time Priority and set to 250 to 320 to stop movement in sports such as football. Football game photos under stadium lights then become very dark and must be corrected latter with my editing program (which you will need). The photos with that kind of ISO then turn out high noise and hence will also need corrected. Over all I love this lens for day time sports. However, there are many times that I wished I had just saved and got the 2.8 70-200mm lens. If you own a camera that will do a higher ISO than 1600 then you will gain a little in that area over me. In extreme dark conditions sports you will have to max out your ISO and sacrifice light by going to a time priority mode, (if you don't want to use flash...I never use the flash-worthless paste ten feet anyway).

Inside a gymnasium: again this lens needs a flash which I refuse to do blinding athletes. To get photos without a flash, you will have to go to at least 800 to 1600 ISO. Any lower and you will have so much blur your photos will be useless. And again Time Priority of about 250 -320 to let in enough light and still lock in all but the fastest movement.

I give this lens great ratings because it deserves it. However, if I could choose now, I would spend the extra money and get the f2.8 glass instead. I would at least be able to adjust down the ISO by one notch or go a little higher on my shutter speed. I little more leeway with the f2.8. Weight wise, I know this glass is lighter than the 2.8 and something worth considering when you're going to be holding a lens up for 2 or more hours at a game.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite lense   October 27, 2009
J. Reeves (Boston, MA USA)
I bought this lense from Amazon about 3 years ago and it is by far my favorite outdoor lense. My son plays baseball and lacrosse and I have gotten many incredible action shots with this lense. I would strongly recommend this lense to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, high quality lense for shooting outdoor sports.

5 out of 5 stars Great, versatile lens   October 27, 2009
C. J Prunty (Phoenix)
This is definitely a fine, versatile lens. The pictures are sharp, the focusing is fast, and the IS is a must-have for me. I tend to take alot of close-up/macro pictures, and this lens works in many of those situations. I added the extender (1.4x) and extention tube (EF25II) to my collection to increase the lens' flexibility. The length of the lens makes it a little cumbersome to carry around, but the weight is just about right. Overall, it is my second favorite lens.

The only regret I have is getting the f4L instead of the f2.8L. I decided not to go for the f2.8 because of the added weight. But when I am trying to take closeup pictures in the early morning garden, I wish I had a faster lens. Ugh, the world of tradeoffs...

5 out of 5 stars My favorite lens!   October 11, 2009
Matthew Taylor (Missouri, USA)
This is the best lens in my camera bag. Meaning: versitile, light, and excellent image quality. I upgraded from the non-IS version(which is a great lens as well) to the IS and love it! I highly recommend this lens. For those who don't shoot birds or racing or in low light stadiums, this lens is all you need. I contemplated the 2.8, but decided for the much lighter weight of the f/4. I can consistently get three more stops with the IS. No complaints whatsoever.Bottomline: Canon L-series+image stabilization=HEAVEN Get this lens.
