Product Description Studio Monitor Series Headphones incorporate high-end materials and advanced engineering; critically clean, exceptionally clear sound for professional and high fidelity applications. Reversible earcups enable single-sided monitoring flexibility. 30 mm diameter drive units are larger than many headphones for deeper bass, lower distortion and wider dynamic range; bass response extends down to a low 18 Hz. 500 mW power handling stands up to day-in, day-out use at high output levels. Ferrite magnets allow for high energy and compact size producing ample sound output - 98 dB/mW sensitivity. Oxygen-free copper cord assures maximum conductivity, minimum noise. It conducts electricity better than conventional copper. Supra-aural design rests lightly on the ear and creates a controlled environment for better sound. Driver is positioned the correct distance from the ear canal. Wide, molded headband distributes the headphone's weight over a wide area; reduced pressure means comfortable listening for hours on end.
Amazon.com Product Description The MDR-V150 closed supra-aural headphones provide top-end comfort and sound quality. Sony's closed type headphones allow only a limited amount of ambient noise into the ear canal, giving your attention fully to the music. The padded earcups fit comfortably, hour after hour. For those who like to use the headphones for single-sided monitoring, these MDR-V150s come with reversible earcups. The supra-aural design is engineered for excellent listening comfort. The wide headband distributes the headphone's weight evenly. The two meter cord (6.6 feet) is made of oxygen-free copper wiring and is double-sided. Sony has installed several key features to these headphones to enhance their sound quality. The thirty millimeter drive units delivers a deep bass sound and a wide dynamic range (the frequency range extends down to 18 Hz.) Both the stereo mini-plug and the UniMatch phone plug are gold-plated to make sure sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones' high conductivity and low noise. Lightweight ferrite magnets allow for high power at a minimum size. Finally, the PET diaphragm works to deliver low distortion. Excellent fit, excellent compatibility and excellent sound: these headphones fit the bill for a sound professional. Headphone November 16, 2009 Joseph D. Ness (San Antonio, TX USA) Works fine. I was hoping for a little more noise filtering from the ear padding but for $15, I guess I shouldn't expect too much. It is worth the $15, tho.
perfect sound; 1/4 the price November 14, 2009 J. Wright (Santa Clara, CA) broke my bose around-ear phones. these are slimmer and match quality. can't wait to break these to buy them again for 10% the price of my bose phones.
They're good FOR WHAT THEY ARE. November 8, 2009 M. A. Lane (Seattle, WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got these headphones about a year and a half ago. Two things to note right off the bat:
1. A year an a half ago I knew VERY LITTLE about the technical side of audio.
2. It's stupid of Sony to call these "Studio Headphones" or even "Monitor Series" headphones.
FIRST OFF, know that these are not "studio quality" by any means, and will be horrible for use in any home or project studio, even if you're just starting out. Go spend $100 on some AKG or Sennheiser phones. Spend more if you can afford it. It's an important investment. These don't provide the audio quality necessary for mixing, or the isolation necessary for tracking in the studio. I'm surprised that the specs say 18 Hz to 22 KHz. Those frequencies are DRASTICALLY and unusably attenuated, if even present at all. If you retain one sentence from this review, it should be this one: These are NOT studio headphones.
THAT ASIDE, these are acceptable throw-around, day-in day-out casual commuting headphones. Before I purchased my Yamaha HS series monitors (not the world's best monitors, but they work for me) and AKG K271 MKII headphones, I thought these Sony headphones sounded really really good. Now that I have good headphones to compare them to, they're a horrible muddy mess with a limited frequency response... but I don't really care when I'm walking along a busy, LOUD street, listening to my iPod, or when I want to pack headphones that I'm not worried about breaking and paying to replace. I'm surprised people say they break theirs all the time. They're not bullet proof... but... what the hell do you do to your headphones...? Mine have held up fine. I do prefer on ear headphones for casual listening, as they're not as huge as over ear models, and because I absolutely hate ear buds. The comfort of these are pretty decent, IMO. Could be better, but they're 20 dollar headphones.
IF THIS REVIEW IS TOO LONG, SKIP TO THIS PART.
To sum it all up, for $20 headphones these can't be beat. They're comfy enough, durable enough, small enough, and decent enough sounding for the average consumer... ESPECIALLY the consumer that only wants to pay $20 for something as important as headphones.
Exceptional value for the price October 30, 2009 F. Stuart Smith (Florida) While by no means comparable to Sennheiser, this is a surprisingly good little headset for the money. I rate it superior to Grundig.
They'er "aight". October 26, 2009 J. Moore (San Leandro, CA) I've owned this series of headphone for some odd reason, because they're not all that good, more than once. It's a quick fix. They're cheep, and do the job. But that's all they do.
The highs aren't high. The bass is virtually non-existent. It's only so-so high point is the mid range, which isn't all that important compared to the other two items.
The construction, as you'd expect by the price is very.. very cheep. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony started throwing these in cereal boxes for the free toy in a few years.
I have to wear glasses, and during long listening sessions (over an hour) my ears began to hurt since these are an "on the ear" headphone. I wouldn't suggest these to anyone, regardless of price, if they wear glasses on a regular basis.
I won't be buying another set. Ever.
