Product Description
The Snowy Day, a 1963 Caldecott Medal winner, is the simple tale of a boy waking up to discover that snow has fallen during the night. Keats's illustrations, using cut-outs, watercolors, and collage, are strikingly beautiful in their understated color and composition. The tranquil story mirrors the calm presence of the paintings, and both exude the silence of a freshly snow-covered landscape. The little boy celebrates the snow-draped city with a day of humble adventures--experimenting with footprints, knocking snow from a tree, creating snow angels, and trying to save a snowball for the next day. Awakening to a winter wonderland is an ageless, ever-magical experience, and one made nearly visceral by Keats's gentle tribute. \n\nThe book is notable not only for its lovely artwork and tone, but also for its importance as a trailblazer. According to Horn Book magazine, The Snowy Day was the very first full-color picture book to feature a small black hero--yet another reason to add this classic to your shelves. It's as unique and special as a snowflake. \n\n\n

Every child should own this book. Please also look for Keats' other wonderful books such as Whistle For Willie, Louie, Apt. 3...

This is a early, easy reader for children. There are many illustrations showing what the words mean. This is a Caldecott Medal book. Goggles (Picture Puffin)Peter's ChairPet Show! 5 out of 5 stars Quite simply, one of the loveliest children's books ever written   February 9, 2010
Wendy Armstrong (Denver, CO)
I've loved this book since I was a child, and now that I have children my appreciation has grown. The story is simple and easy for youngsters to understand, but beautifully conveys the wonder of waking up to freshly fallen snow and having the day to experience it. We read this one in our household over and over, and it never gets old.

4 out of 5 stars One of the classics of picture books   February 3, 2010
Ulyyf (NYC)
We all remember the joy of a snowy day as a child, before you had to shovel, right?

Making footprints in the snow. Making snowmen, snow angels, snowballs. Discovering that snow melts if you put it in your pocket for later when you come in the house.

This book doesn't attempt to tell a story with problems to solve, villains, or much of a plot. Instead, it just follows Peter through his day exploring his world and being a child. Beautiful, sweet - every library needs this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!   December 11, 2009

I remember my mom reading this book to me as a child. I still enjoy it just as much as an adult, reading it to my children. Ezra Jack Keats is a favorite author in our house!
