All in All a Good Laptop July 19, 2008 I've had this laptop now for about 2 years, and it is a pretty nice laptop. It's got a great 17 inch screen, and it has lots of power. It's basically my main computer that I use, even though I have a desktop also. When I purchased it I had also purchased the 4 year warranty that Toshiba offered, which is transferrable. Toshiba took care of the overheating for me, among other things. Needless to say that warranty did come in handy. If you do decide to buy any laptop I would suggest getting a warranty with it.
DON'T BUY IT - SPENDS MORE TIME IN REPAIR THAN ON YOUR DESK March 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I researched laptop repair history & all the features. I thought it was so great - I BOUGHT TWO! $3800 later - we've got two laptops that send us into orbit, screaming & pulling our hair. Constant problems, shutdowns, meltdowns - this laptop was in the shop within 30 days & has spent its lifetime there every couple months. Overheats like crazy - even with an extra laptop fan I bought to go under them. Loses connection to the wireless & the direct connection for no apparent reason - the repair people told us to NEVER BUY A TOSHIBA. Shuts down for no apparent reason & then turns itself back on! ERRRRRRRR.
So........a glutton for punishment, I bought a Toshiba Notebook for my daughter in med school AND WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED? It has spent 7 months out of its first year in the shop. Toshiba claims they didn't get the order for a warranty renewal online.
TOSHIBA LAPTOPS are unreliable & will make you crazy for their downtime.
DO NOT BUY Toshiba laptops if you want to keep your sanity. The repair folks told us to try ACER - but since we now have over $5400 in Toshiba Laptops (not to mention $900 in warranties) - we are sick with the thought of shelling out more cash. Thank goodness we bought the extended warranty on 2 of them - we're paying through the nose on the Notebook.
DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA.
Overheats April 16, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This notebook overheats. The only solution is to clean the heatsink and on the P35 there's no easy access. You'll need to disassemble the ENTIRE notebook to get to the heatsink.
Save yourself the trouble. Don't buy a Toshiba.
Worst piece of just ever. It shouldn't get a single star. March 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this piece of garbage a little over two years ago. I was stupid and didn't pay for the extended warantee. Lucky me the computer started having issues just under a year so it was still under the basic warantee. First problem was that the power supply (charger) started making noises like it was shorting and it was probably not far from catching fire. While bringing that in to a Toshiba autorized repair center I mentioned that my computer was getting really hot and turning off. I thought it was just that I was using it too much. They told me to call Toshiba and bring it in. I did. They replaced the motherboard. After a month or so it started doing the same thing where it was getting hot and turning off. The computer would only be on for 15 minutes or so before it would turn off. I brought it back to the repair center and they supposedly fixed it again. Another month and the same problem. I called Toshiba and they had me send it into one of their facilities. I got it back after a few weeks and it ran fine for a couple of months. Big surprise it ran for a while and had the same issues again. I was pretty busy at that time so I didn't get around to calling Toshiba for about six months. When I did they told me to send it in to their main facility in Southern California. They would have a senior technician work on it. They did and about three more weeks later I got the computer. After another month or so it is started the problem again. I am now trying to get Toshiba to recognize that this was a bad computer to begin with but they say there is nothing wrong. Now that a senior technician has worked on it and said it is fine they won't take it back anymore. I spent over $2000 on the piece of junk and it has been nothing but a headache. Everytime I call Toshiba I have to sit on hold for at least 10 minutes to talk to an operator. They then give me the 3rd degree before they can transfer me to customer relations. Then I get to sit on hold for at least a half an hour. Then I talk to someone in the Phillipines that couldn't care less about my situation. Anyone on here that gives this terrible computer a good review either works for Toshiba or they haven't actually had the computer more than a week. I even asked Toshiba to just replace my computer with a smaller lower end refurbished model. They say they can't do that. I don't know how they can get away with this. I obvoiusly bought a lemon and Toshiba won't do anything about it. It would have been better if I just burned 20 $100 bills. That way I wouldn't have had to waste so much time on the phone and I would have just bought another computer sooner. I finally accepted my loss and went out and bought a macbook. So far I can tell that this is a far superior computer. I don't want to review it before I have had it a few months but I really am in love with this thing. Don't buy Toshiba. Get a Mac.
Could I give below one star? January 17, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this laptop from Toshiba, It was one of the first reasonably priced 17 inch laptops that I saw. Next time I will pay the money and buy from Dell. The laptop was supposed to be a gaming laptop desktop replacement. I am a gamer, this is not a gaming laptop, the video card is poor because you cannot get in updated drivers for it. ATI the maker of it washed their hands of it. I have bought games that should easily run on this, and it has problems. I upgraded the ram and it still has problems. Never get a gaming laptop with a integrated Video card.
I am a computer tech, the problems that I have had, the PC DVD writer has never worked correclty it will not recognize a lot of Cds. Burning is a whole other issue. The CD maker is actually panasonic which has no updates for it and they always say talk to Toshiba, which has virtually no tech support. I do work Dells and IBM's all the time, with them they can send me the part, with Toshiba you have to give your laptop to a supposed repair shop. I took my laptop in and they swapped the CD-rom, brought it home and the fans were twice as loud, went back, they fixed that came back. And the PC was letting out a notice tha Motherboard was broke. I took it back and they replaced the motherboard. And the CDrom still has issues.
A year goes by, and my problems have started again, the PC started freezing more the likely overheating. I reinstalled the operating system still has problems, So I took it back to the incompentant morons and they are fixing it again. I think the system board is bad but since Toshiba can't send me the part my hands are tied.
I put a complaint with Toshiba since I got the 3 yr warranty. and whatever the outcome is, they will probally fix it. But I bet it will break again in a year.
This laptop design was flawed to begin with, they used a 3.2 DESKTOP processor in it and it gives off way too much heat because its designed for desktops. I should have waited and got the pentium M. Toshiba wanted to get it out because it was the new 17 inch screens. In all this means BUYER BEWARE, I should have and regretted it ever since.
Lastly, I will never and tell all my friends and family ever to buy a Toshiba, they have no support.
