Product Description
After a three-year assignment in the field FBI agent Henry Durand (Colin Hanks) returns home with his fiance (Selma Blair) only to find his once-dowdy over weight mother Martha has transformed into the highly attractive enlightened Marty (Meg Ryan) who dates every night of the week. When Marty meets the mysterious Tommy (Antonio Banderas) Henry is ordered to spy on his mother after learning Tommy may be involved in an international art theft ring.

The premise is delicious: A young, by-the-book FBI agent (Colin Hanks) is assigned his new highest-profile assignment yet--spying on his own mother (Meg Ryan). My Mom's New Boyfriend is a romantic comedy long on both romance and comedy, and gives Ryan her first film in a long time where she can take the laughs and run with them. Viewers will remember, with a grateful sigh, why she long reigned as the queen of American romantic comedy. Ryan plays Marty, devoted mom, who last saw her son, Henry (Hanks), three years ago when she was unhealthy, coarse, and overweight (looking like she might have borrowed Monica's fat suit from Friends). When Henry returns home from his secret op, fiancee in tow (Selma Blair), Marty's still coarse, but has become a babe with a healthy libido. ("Oh Henry, lighten up!" is Marty's oft-repeated refrain.) Henry is horrified, but his girlfriend, Emily, is entranced. In fact, some of the film's best chemistry is between these two gifted actresses, as they spark and feed off each other's energy. When Marty takes up with the sultry Tommy (Antonio Banderas), Henry gets the ultimate "TMI" assignment: spying on his mom and her honey, suspected in an art-theft ring. Hanks squirms convincingly, Banderas smolders, and Ryan truly sparkles, giving her wacky side free rein. If the plot has a few potholes, it doesn't matter, since the cast is so stellar and has such magnetism. By sheer determination and talent, the ensemble delivers laughs and poignancy, by turns. Extras include deleted scenes (and a few memorable bloopers), and a behind-the-scenes featurette on filming on location in northern Louisiana. --A.T. Hurley

2 out of 5 stars Yawn   August 12, 2008
This one is not worth your time. I gave it 2 stars only because I have actually seen worse movies. I thought the combination of Ryan and Banderas would be good but I was proven wrong. Ryan's acting was so contrived and it was painful to watch her collagen-enhanced lip any time she smiled. I agree with other reviewers that the plot was really unbelievable but that is OK if the movie is entertaining. Unfortunately, this one was not. It dragged and I actually grabbed my laptop to play some mindless solitaire while watching the second half of the movie. Even the "twist" ending was obvious throughout. Meg Ryan definitely did not live up to her work in other movies and, quite frankly, she tried way too hard to be cutesie. Thank goodness I only rented this one but it leaves me with $5 I'd like to have back and, more importantly, 90 minutes of my life as well.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Movie   July 31, 2008

This movie has nothing to recommend it. You can tell it's going to be bad when the cheesy cuts to the next scene start happening right away. There is no spark to either of the romantic pairings, and almost no apparent reason why the people would be interested in each other. The crime aspect is flimsy, and the FBI guys are terribly unbelievable. The whole thing is such a mess that it makes you cringe. This moview isn't even worth renting.

3 out of 5 stars Light and bouncy   July 28, 2008

I rather enjoyed it this movie for what it was, a slapstick, no brainer, dumb comedy. It was also great to see Meg Ryan working in a genre that she had previously made so successful. Meg shined in this with her Carole Lombard quirks and neurosis making the film fun to watch. I thought she looked quite radiant, never looked better as a matter of fact, but who cares about that, she grabbed hold of this role and ran with it, had some fun. This is a romantic comedy with a sub plot dealing with the heist genre which I'm not a fan of, which is why this lost a star, but you may like that aspect of it. Antonio Banderas was a charming pro, Colin Hanks may not be his Father Tom, but still managed to hold his own in a large role, and Selma Blair is always good, too bad they couldn't beef her role just a bit more, her chemistry with Meg was a dream. Looking for something light where you can kick back on a Sunday and not have to think, then this film might do the trick for you, it's not for everyone, but it may be for you.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing too offensive, kind of fun   July 24, 2008

A few chuckles, a little bit of plot, and some star power. I wish there'd been more Selma Blair on screen. I like her but ... her part could have been played by anybody.

It's kind of scary when Meg Ryan smiles (her face is a disaster, but her lips are freaky) but other than that she looks good and can still pull off her Megness like no one else. There are a couple scenes that are pure Meg. When Antonio is fawning over how hot she looks, she responds "Yeah! I know!" Only Meg could do that and not make everybody sick. In another scene she gets mad at him and throws a fit, punching and screaming into the air. Antonio just watches until its over and is speechless (so was I) but for a genuinely soft-spoken "Wow." It was nice to see those scenes. Meg's still got it and Antonia doesn't seem like he's going to lose it any time soon.

It was a pleasant surprise to see how good Antonio looks. Maybe I just haven't seen him in a while. I've always liked him in comedies. If you like Antonio, you'll love the scene where he ends up with each hand in a glass of water (or white wine?). Antonio could charm the socks off ... I dunno, somebody who really needed their socks.

That's what these kinds of movies are all about, right? How good do our stars look? How much we enjoy seeing our favorite celebrities prance about ... acting.

There's a light twist at the end so everybody can be happy. Upon reflection it explained a few unanswered hmmmm's from previous scenes but I didn't see it coming because I wasn't expecting it; I didn't need it and I had forgotten about those scenes because this isn't a movie you keep score on. That's cool

1 out of 5 stars Oh, why did such talent stoop to this drivel   July 23, 2008

Banderas, Meg Ryan, young Colin Hanks.
Did they READ the script? Were they blackmailed into making this?
Unwatchable. Painful stuff.
I was cringing inside of 5 minutes. I gave it another 20 to be nice but then couldn't take anymore.
Watch City of Angels City of Angels instead.
Or When Harry Met Sally. When Harry Met Sally... (Collector's Edition)
Two classics that Meg was brilliant in.
