Simple, yet intricate....joy. "Bella" is a little movie you might not have heard of yet. Released in theatres, it didn't get a lot of media time. Never made it to my hometown. I immediately put it in my Netflix queue and eagerly watched the release date inch closer.
Saturday night. Coca Cola on ice. Eagerly awaited movie on the DVD player. Close to heaven...but not quite there yet!
90 minutes later, I have a grin on my face and tears in my eyes and the unmistakable impression that I have just watched something perfect.
Jose, a soccer-star-turned-chef at his brother's restaurant....Nina, the just-fired-surprisingly-pregnant waitress from the same restaurant Jose could have let Nina walk away, but chooses to follow her....and there ensues the kind of gentle knowing that only magic allows to happen.
Hauntingly beautiful, sparingly sweet. A movie for everyone who needs a little "special" in their lives. You won't be the same when you've finished watching this one.

I watched this movie with my wife and 6 children (ages 5-15) and we all LOVED it! It was so beautiful and inspirational! It is about love, kindness, friendship, charity....it is truly edifying. And there are no sex scenes, swearing etc.. so it is suitable for the entire family. Have a box if tissues ready because this movie will truly touch your heart. Definitly 5 stars!

First let me say how much I wanted to love this movie. I guess it was last Summer when I heard about it and was anxiously waiting the DVD
release, pre-ordering it from Amazon. So, while my husband was away for the weekend visiting yet another baseball stadium, I couldn't wait to
spend time with me, myself and "Bella". It started off with promise, but progessively moved into torture mode, boring me to tears - almost.
Of course, like any bad film there is a moment or two that are bright spots, the acting is OK although but I think this movie suffers
from bad editing. At the end, I was left with "So What?" Sure, every day
one's life can change forever, but this movie did not bring that message home in a profound way. I just didn't care and felt I wasted my time.
Movie Viewing At Its Best May 11, 2008
I love a great movie. Bella was a great movie. It tugs at your heart strings, pulls on your emotions, caresses your sensiivity, and touches on pain, suffering, joy and love in a 1-1/2 hour time period. The lead characters, Jose and Nina, manifest acting at its best. I was drawn in, involved, emotionally affected and enjoyed the final scenes. This is a movie I will buy and add to my small collection of memorable movies.
Past and Future, Hope and Despair May 10, 2008

As an exercise in visual story-telling, Bella makes clever use of both flashback and flash-forward to illustrate the influences of hope and despair upon the potential redemption of the present. Director Monteverde deliberately keeps his audience in suspense as to what decision the character of Nina will make with regard to her unwanted pregnancy or if the character of Jose will ever emerge from the shadows of guilt and depression. Both the tragic and the hopeful narrative lines are kept open until the movie abruptly ends. The movie ends where it began, on the beach, but what at first seemed a tragic tale, turns out to be a hopeful new beginning for Jose, Nina, and child. We are not doomed to repeat tragic pasts (a recurring theme in Latin-American literature)but can find hope in other parts of our life experience. The character of the older brother, Manny, is the a chief antagonist early on who becomes the surprise emblem of redemption in the film's final act. My only complaint with this film is that it was too short to do justice to all of the nuanced characters we are introduced to. Nina's choice was not the only decision being made by these fascinating characters. It would have been nice for Mr. Monteverde to have taken us along on a few of their narrative strands.
