Amazon.com A movie that exudes affection and goodwill, The World's Fastest Indian is an unabashed mash note to a lovely character from New Zealand's recent past. Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a cantankerous Kiwi with an obsession: he's been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years, pushing it to ever-faster speeds. It's the 1960s, and Burt has the utterly mad idea of taking the bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world records for speed racing. The movie takes a while to get to the journey--and then the journey takes a while--but the genial atmosphere prevails. (People of a certain age, for whom the word "Bonneville" evokes pleasant associations with hotrods and world-speed records, will not be disappointed in the film's location shooting, or its sense of awe.) Hopkins is not quite on-the-money casting for the jovial, happy-go-lucky Munro, and his accent wavers, but he nails the emotional scenes and the fascination with speed. Smaller bits are well-filled by Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford (son of Peter), who looks uncannily of the era. New Zealand director Roger Donaldson doesn't take any chances here, but the story clearly means something to him, and that sense of commitment carries the film through its sleepier moments. --Robert Horton

I must watch this movie again July 10, 2010 GBSmith (CA USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading the reviews and seeing the movie, I doubt if it is the same one. As one reviewer wrote, it was a delight for the whole family... which member of the family thought it delightful how the fellow waters his lemon tree? Also, the fellow rides more women than motorcycles, (great for the kids). And as a bonus it features a transvestite. Another reviewer wrote it has beautiful scenery, salt and treeless mountains? Even on a film making level the movie was sub par - several scenes could have been deleted and the story line would not have suffered. The filmmakers like to say it took 25 years to make this movie, unfortunately it was not time well spent.
a delightful movie for all ages July 1, 2010 ema 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have seen this movie at least 6 times and still enjoy it. Anthony Hopkins is so good in this part, such talent he has. This is a movie that will appeal to women and men of most ages. I misplaced my last movie and purchased a new one, cant be without my favorite adventure.
Who says you are "too old"? June 29, 2010 ThorBjorn (Minnesota) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here we have the inspiring tale of Burt Munro... the TRUE story of an elderly motorcycle-racer who set out on what he thought would be his last adventure.
Munro was an eccentric old fellow living in the quiet little town of Invercargill, New Zealand, where he was well known for his proficiency with motorcycles. Tinkering in the garage that was also his home, he customized his prized 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle. Originally having a top speed of 55 MPH, Munro modified this bike considerably. The end-result was an antique motorcycle encased in a racing-fairing, and capable of 200 MPH!
This movie chronicles Munro's trek to Bonneville Flats,Utah, in the 1960s. His quest: to set a world speed-record on his customized Indian. So, with limited funds, a heart-condition, and an optimist's minset, he sailed half-way around the world to a strange land. Despite several set-backs, Munro encountered a number of benign characters who helped him on his way.
This film portrays Munro's first trip. There's more to the story...
Munro did set his record, and actually returned to Bonneville Flats several times as an exalted and respected figure among the racing crowd.
