Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi. Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services. A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the device. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription. Multi-Destination Routing Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen
| This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Where Am I? Where's My Car? The nüvi 700 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?"
At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, the nüvis in the 700 series automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount. See Better, See More The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
First Rate Map Data The nüvi 780 is preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping. Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store. Hands-Free Calling In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi 780's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log. Garmin Lock Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location Easy To Use Interface Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Beyond Navigation Browse your stored pictures with an easy-to-use JPEG viewer. | A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards. | nüvi accepts custom points of interest (POIs). Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

garmin 780 nuvi November 19, 2009 Joseph Manion (pittsburgh) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
it's great, had one of the first gps devices from 5 years ago this one is far superior, love it , ez to use, works great
It works fine November 18, 2009 Vince L. Wilson (Oklahoma city , Ok. USA) This is our 1st GPS, we never thought we needed one to get around. well, it came in just a few days, I charged it up before any use, then used it without the cord, the battery life was about 2.5 hours, the blue tooth worked fine and was easy to set up and use.Its big and easy to see and read, We used the vacum thing to stick it to the windsheild, we may want to buy one of dash mounts soon, we are very happy with the speed at witch it loads up, finds the sat, and refreshes, , The refresh rate surprised me and pleased me, over all, we are very happy with this GARMIN NUVI 780.
The only down side, (if its a down side,) is the price, we did not want to spend that amount of money for a GPS. but feel we are getting our monies worth.

Try this on a motorcycle! November 17, 2009 Jetboy (OC, CA, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love the Nuvi in my car, and as a discontinued item, the 780 is relatively cheap due in part to the MSN interface which is being discontinued. Being on a motorcycle (with a separate RAM mount and a hardwired power supply for another $50 or so) I don't get the traffic updates or MSN service, but who cares? Screen is bright enough to see in daylight (barely, in direct sun), audio at 100% is loud enough to hear thru my helmet at city speeds. Bluetooth is a disappointment in that it doesnt sync with my Chatterbox XBI, but...whatever. Touch screen is easily manipulated with gloves on. Perfect for facilitating touring and finding the nearest gas station.
$200 for the 780 compared to $650 for a Zumo 660 is a HUGE bargain. If it rains, put it away or put a ziplock baggie on it. You have to replace it three times to make up the difference
Ok, but disappointed overall November 16, 2009 JD (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased the Garmin Nuvi 780 expecting to blown away, but I suppose my expectations were too high...
I upgraded from a Magellan 2000 (real old). Though this one looks nicer, is faster, and has some more/nicer features, and is more reliable, I miss how the other worked. I have only had for a couple weeks.
Navigation - On two occasions I searched for a point of interest I knew was there, but it could not be found. On two other occasions, it found the point of interest, but could not find it via navigation. (Fortunately I knew how to get there both times). I miss having the street I am on at the top, and where I am going next on the bottom (or visa versa). This one cycles through the two on the top, which can be confusing. Also, when navigating, if you use the 3d mode, there is no way to tell which direction you are traveling (N-E-S-W). There should be a compass at minimum, or at least a key telling which way is north. Where is my split screen showing which way to turn, and that "next-turn-after-the-first" preview?
Ease of use - This is where I am most frustrated. Detours require a sub-menu, rather than "popping" on the screen when it sees you stop on a road that you should be moving on. Also, when searching for locations or addresses, you have to enter the state by spelling it. So I type "N-J" and then "done" and it says "no results", so I have to click "back" and then "N-e-w" then "done" and then select "New Jersey". I should be able to do either, and it should "auto" select after touching a few keys. Why do I have to click "done". The older magellan did this. Also, why can't I just enter a zip code first and have it auto-select the state and city? Where did that feature go? It's not a big deal if you are stopped and entering stuff, but doing stuff on the road is a pain and tedious.
Map - Also disappointed here. Where did all my map detail go? There is a "detail" setting, but you put it on the most detailed setting and there are still almost no street or road names. I want to know what all the roads I'm passing are, and what road that is running parallel to me!
Overall - Before I go on a rant of what I don't like, it does look nice, has a lot of customized settings, voices don't sound bad, blue tooth works well, battery seems fine (so far), screen is plenty large, it sticks to my window real well, and it seems to find "most" of the places I throw at it. However, I can't help buy feel they upgraded the looks, slimmed the form-factor, upgraded the hardware, "refined" the UI, and then slapped together the way everything works. It just doesn't seem real well thought out.
I'm not returning it, but I am giving to my wife. I will try a different one for myself.
