3 out of 5 stars Good Speakers for low price   November 17, 2009
PC-Dude (Chicago, IL)
These are personal speakers, that is, they will not fill a room with sound but a small area in front of the PC. (Which is what I was looking for.) The cables between the volume unit and the sub-woofer are directly attached and cannot be replaced. (This is bad if the cable breaks, or you want to use different lengths.)

At high volumes the small top speakers start clipping.

So, the short of it, if your need is small personal speakers which to listen to music, or games at medium volumes, this is an ideal low cost solution. However, I may already have to upgrade because I would like better sound at higher volumes.

3 out of 5 stars If you need cheap speakers, thumbs up... otherwise you should pay more   November 17, 2009

I use these for my lap top so didn't want to go crazy with expensive speakers. I gave this three stars, even though I would say I am overall happy with these speakers as a starter set for my purposes. They are really cheap for what you get. In that regard, I almost want to give them 4 stars for functionality. HOWEVER:

1) They definitely are low end with respect to sound quality. There are definitely worse speakers, but these could not possibly be considered particularly good.
2) If you are a nerd about sound, it requires that you manually adjust the subwoofer. Better speakers will not require that you do this. I guess if you really really like bass, then this is the set for you. Otherwise, it really is odd how often I have to adjust the subwoofer setting.
3) They take up a bit of space for the sound quality. If you're going to take up that much room, you might as well pay up a bit more for better sound.
4) The wires end up being bit short for my purposes. Each piece is connected together, making it a bit of a web of wires. I REALLY wish there was another way around that.

However, for the price you can't beat it. If you're broke and want something better than a lap top speaker, this not a bad starter set.

4 out of 5 stars Good system for my desk   November 16, 2009

It's a nice system. It hooks up easily with mp3/walkman/computer. There is some static noise that's a bit annoying though, otherwise can't complain.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sound And Decent Bass   November 4, 2009
Brad Aronson
Although these aren't for people who really want to feel the floor shake while listening to music, they are perfect for the everyday listener. The only issue I've had is that the volume control on the actual speakers cannot be turned up all the way while connected to a computer at maximum volume, it creates a lot of distortion and bad sound quality (but this is way after what many would consider loud).

2 out of 5 stars Low price, low quality   November 3, 2009
KP (Boston)
Build quality is questionable. The "dock" has a smaller side port into which you can plug an iPod with an included short cable. The connection at this input became faulty and unusable within a month of use. Also, when I had the system set up within close proximity of an absurd amount of other electronics, the bass would pick up interference and make annoying pit-patter and humming sounds.

Yes, these speakers are only $40, so as a borderline audiophile, I needn't be bashing on their low quality sound. That being said, using the relatively cheap etymotic er6i's for reference, these speakers sound horrible. When I pull out the buds and switch to the speakers, I temporarily find myself thinking the dull muffled sound from the speakers is due to a problem with my hearing! Anyway, these speakers will be loud enough to fill a large room. The bass, the strong point of the system, while still not especially refined, has no problem keeping up with the speakers.

In conclusion, these speakers will be fine for the likes of tweenage girls blasting Miley Cyrus or dorm room pre-gaming, but even the most casual music-lovers should avoid them.
