Cheaply made, failed power supply December 31, 2008 Purchased this product 14/Feb. It is cheaply made, but it ran full time until now, when the power supply failed. So far I have not received a response from Sabrent tech support (they only provide an email form, no phone number whatsoever).
On the bright side, it's made out of aluminum, which is great for sheding heat from the drive without needing a fan (means almost no dust inside), and I never had any problems with heat. It runs very quiet (obviously dependant on the drive to some extent).
As others have said, the side panels are a tad flimsy, and you have to make sure they are installed correctly prior to putting the screws into the top cover. Once the case is assembled, my experience is they stay put.
Overall, I'd say you get what you pay for -- if you're looking for quality, this isn't it.
Cheap, cheap, cheap! November 10, 2008 WOW! Are these things chintzy or what?
I just received a couple of them - thankfully they both appear to work. I get about 9MB/sec throughput on each with an old IBM 16GB IDE drive (It's all I had laying around my office desk.) when I copy a 4GB file to them. They don't appear to handle multiple accesses very well because when I opened Disk Manager while I was copying my 4GB file to the USB drive, Disk Manager sat for about 30 seconds waiting for the USB drive to respond before it could give me back the UI.
The build quality is laughable. I have no confidence in these lasting very long and will have to keep my paperwork on hand for when they fail. The space inside is not optimal. And as others have said the cables have to be sort of smashed around to get the drive mounted. The cheezy case construction doesn't bother me, but I am concerned that the electronics will die very soon. The power supplies are about as cheap as you can get and still be UL listed.
If you buy these, you must be prepared to receive something REALLY CHEAP.
Driver Support Lacking October 13, 2008 I did not have any problem installing a hard drive, but the driver mini-cd supplied with the unit does not work for Windows 2000, and it is almost impossible to find the right one. If I ever find the driver, I might like the unit, but I would not advise buying one of these.
Great for the price! September 4, 2008 I also was hesitant to buy from what I read in the reviews. Glad I did. The case is all metal. The thickness is very adequate. Space is tight, but needs to be, to provide cooling for the drive. I've purchased a number of various drive cases in the past and I would rate this one as one of the better ones. The ability to use either a SATA or IDE drive is a real plus. Just wish it had Firewire.
Sabrent enclosure July 28, 2008 This enclosure did not work right out of the box. I sent it back and purchased the Hard Disk USB 3.5 Inch External Enclosure SATA/IDE NEW from Gemtronix, which works great.
