3 out of 5 stars Not too bad for a 2nd PC , but not too great either..........   July 29, 2008
1 out of 4 found this review helpful

I picked this MOBO just to find out what this new "Hybrid SLI " thing that
i've been reading about in several PC magazines over the past few months.
Here's the skinny.....
While the majority of you out there who have built your own PC's over the
years as i have already are in the "KNOW" about this *NEW* and rather strange technology none of what i am writing will come as a suprise to you. With that said , let's move on to the many of you out there who are either building your own PC for the first time(notice i didn't use the phrase-'NOOB' or 'NEWBIE",that's because as far as I am concerned if your'e not collecting a weekly paycheck with a degree in PC buiding under your belt then whether you want to face it or not...YOU A NEWBIE..myself
humbley included.

Anyway's back to the product.

If you're looking for a basic all around(Web-Surfing/Play a few games) kind of setup, then this board is for you , for the price , you can't beat
it , but if you're a first time builder looking to build a gaming setup,
you may want to do a little more research and select another board.
Hybrid SLI...Don't let this overhyped catch-phrase fool you. Hybrid SLI is a process where the (onboard graphics accelerator) will take up the slack when your plug-in graphics card is idle(when your'e not gaming)and that's it. Nothing more..Nothing Less and not to mention this only works
in this (Hybrid-Onboard/Plug-in) Combo when your monitor is plugged into your Onboard VGA connection, you can't use the VGA port on your plug-in card. Dissapointing Huh....yeah well i thought so to.

Many of you who have heard this term for the first time without fully understanding what this means as far as the Multi-media side of computing
probably figured that this was something that would Revolutionize PC gaming for the budget conscience(myself included) without having to shell out for the cost of 2 Highend Videocards...right? Wrong.
Hybrid SLI will get you*LITTLE* to *NO* performance gain when gaming , as a matter of fact, in my tests I've found that it takes a real toll on your
computer resources, not to mention your cpu-*My tests were done with a low-end AMD 4600X2 cpu ,depending on what brand you have in your rig certain tests may vary*.

To sum it all up without all the Tech-Psycho Babble..This Mobo and other's
like it will most likely get use in up and coming 'Consumer PC's' in order to draw a Fine line between the(Enthusist's) and the Consumer needs for a all-in-one box with a little "UMMFF" to it graphics-wise while staying Budget Friendly, after all it is based on the 8200 chipset.

As of now from what I've read from *REAL* Tech sites and of course I've tried this out for myself , the only graphics cards that are even compatiable with this sort of setup(on the Nvidia side)is the Low-End Geforce 8400/8500GS(PCIE), SO IF YOUR THINKING OF POPPING IN AN 8800-Forget it........it will not work. But don't take my word for it , do the research and then do the math and it will all ad up quite easily.

For the consumer/future pc purchaser having 'Hybrid SLI' is a 2 for 1 deal, you can get your work done with apps that require a little graphic boost while having both(Onboard and Internal) cards(*Supposedly*) running at the same time while having the luxury of turning the onboard or plug-in card (OFF) through SPECIAL software or your(BIOS)that comes with these types of boards.Like i mentioned,my tests showed very poor results in this type of configuration - especially with games.

If you're looking to build a basic all around (2nd PC) for yourself or for
the family or a possible (All-in-One/Home Media Box)i would definitely
recommend this board , but if your into serious gaming i would advise you
to pass on this one. Maybe in time there will be future boards that will allow enthusists builders-(I'm one)- to plug in a High-end videocard to take advantage of this TECH in ways we cannot imagine, but sadly , that time is not upon us now...at least not with this particular model.
