A must read!! November 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this biography. The author researched his subject matter thoroughly and was able to write without giving the reader pre-conceptions. I was absolutely fascinated, this book separates fact from myth, gives an incredibily intimate look at Hilter and his "family" circle. Although the Nazi regime without question committed genocide on a massive scale, the main players were rather ordinary human beings in a most extraordinary time and place. I would recommend this bio to anyone wanting to explore the life and times which brought the Nazi party to power, and it's ultimate failure. These were not just a group of egotisical and insane individuals, but brilliant in their own right. I will never be able to wrap my mind around the unbridled racism of the regime, yet I can admire them. It really makes one think. If they would have used their gifts for good it most certainly would be a different world. They weren't pure evil as they are usually depicted. I would suggest reading "Mein Kampf" as a companion to this bio.
Hitler's darkening spiral August 25, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Early (1976) comprehensive and definitive biography of Hitler. Well done but so depressing in content and import that I can't rate it a classic.
Hitler appears more human, more pathetic, and more culpable for his behavior and his results. Toland leaves no doubt as he marshals the documentary evidence that the "final solution" to the 'Jewish problem" (total annihilation) was not a side-tracking of the Hitler (and Party , and German nation, there was no distinction as he moved into power) plan.
It seems I have spent all summer going from Lincoln to Napoleon to Hitler in a darkening spiral. Tellingly, Hitler compared himself to Napoleon, as may seem most apropos given the political geography they shared. Had either man the shining moral and spiritual compass of Lincoln how different history would have been!
Excellent August 22, 2008 Very much an eye opener; so many things I have read separately, this book pulls it all together.
There have been a few author comments I didn't care for; but the factual content out shines that minor inconvenience.
Incredible ... August 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Increditble detail about a man who ruined so many; his rise and fall and how it was facilitated ... the scary thing is it's been such a relatively short time since ...
It is as advertised ... the definitive biography
Adolf Hitler, a superlative popular history July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Adolf Hitler: The definitive biography. John Toland, 1976. This biography forms a very interesting historical narrative. It presents a lively account of the smoldering resentment and visceral hatred of Jews and Bolsheviks that consumed the mind of the subject individual. Based on archival records, unpublished diaries, notes, memoirs and recorded interviews with over 250 former participants, John Toland provides a masterful compilation of the major events, speeches, conversations, decisions and their consequences that marked the career of Adolf Hitler. As a youth, he drifted aimlessly in Vienna. By 1914, he became ecstatic about volunteering for military service. About the end of the Great War, he was temporarily blinded in a mustard gas attack. At that point, about half way through his life, he heard "supernatural voices" summoning him to enter politics and save Germany. In a meteoric rise to supreme power as leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) party, he became a fanatical dictator. The Fatherland, The Fuhrer, Lebensraum (implying aggressive Germanic territorial expansion)are key words here. He galvanized the populace into frenzied support of his governing policies; then embarked on total war that soon reached global proportions. Early territorial conquests accompanied by an unprecedented slaughter of countless millions constituted Hitler"s "Final Solution" to the Jewish problem as he saw it. After the fortunes of war had turned irrevocably against him he married his mistress in a bunker in Berlin. Two days later they both committed suicide. As Toland puts it: "The flag fell where he fell and when he died so did National Socialism and the Thousand Year Reich. Because of this his beloved Germany lay in ruins".
