Product Description
When Selwyn is accused of murdering his rival, Farold, he is sealed in the village burial cave with Farold’s moldering corpse to await starvation—or worse. Worse comes along quickly in the form of a witch who raises Farold from the dead. Selwyn thought he disliked Farold when he was alive, but that was nothing compared to working by the dead man’s side as they search for the real killer.

4 out of 5 stars Dirty Laundry   June 13, 2006
One day while removing stumps from a field, young Selwyn finds out that he is being accused of the murder of a semi-rival. The both were trying for the hand of the same girl and Selwyn lost. Now that his rival is dead, Selwyn is believed guilty as a matter of course. Before he even knows what is happening, he is officially found guilty and imprisoned in the burial tomb where the dead rival is being laid to rest. All seems hopeless until Selwyn gets a visit from a witch looking for some hair from a newly dead man. Selwyn now has a chance of survival and that means a chance of clearing his name.

Clearing his name is not a simple as Selwyn thinks it should be. To do so he will need help from the witch and that will cost him time in her service. One of the things he needs is to contact his dead rival who's soul is then brought back into a bat. At every turn Selwyn finds himself deeper in debt to the witch and no closer to his goal. His new bat companion is a real jerk and Selwyn keeps uncovering details conveniently not mentioned previously. As the plot progresses, the number of suspects continues to grow as the deceased was not exactly liked. How Selwyn manages to complete his task in the little time he has makes for a fun story.

Part of this book reminded me of the film Drowning Mona where the question isn't so much who committed the murder but who didn't. It is fun to see the town's hidden scandals and secrets revealed as Selwyn tries to figure out who the murderer is. A fun and fast-paced tale full of magic, mystery and scandal. Check it out.

Young adult book about seventeen year old, Selwyn Roweson. The story begins with Selwyn being accused and convicted as a murderer. It's kind of hard to protest when they've gagged your mouth and you have no say in the matter. Because there is no executoner in the small town and the townspeople don't want to have to wait for the authorities, they decide to bury Selwyn with the dead body in a local burial cave. The dead, Farold, was never a friend of Selwyn. As a matter of fact, the two boys were both vying for the hand of the same pretty girl. (She chose Farold.) But when a strange witch shows up inside the dark cave and shows Selwyn the way out (after agreeing to payment), Selwyn finds himself with a chance to find the real killer (with the help of the witch and the dead Farold).

Wittily told. I laughed throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Pun Shanghai's Book Review   May 27, 2005

Never Trust a Dead Man is definitely a great book; hence its interesting title. The protagonist is a teenaged boy, Selwyn, who have been falsely accused of killing his lifetime enemy, Farold. As a punishment, he is to be buried alive in the burial cave with Farold's dead body. The story heats up when a witch comes along and raises Farold up from the dead to help Selwyn find the real murderer. This teamed up of a dead man and a falsely accused murderer makes this plot unique from every other book I have ever read. Original as it is, the plot also moves quite rapidly, with surprising entrances of new characters. To make the story juiced up, there are many foreshadowing that lead to solving the main conflict of discovering the real murderer. However, each time the chapter progress, the foreshadowing lead us to a new suspect. During the story, I sometimes wondered about what I would do if I was in Selwyn's place, and found myself stuck with many different thoughts. Despite my thoughts, the story seems to always go a different direction. The only correct prediction I made about this book is probably the theme, which is "There is a nice side behind every evil man." A perfect example of this is my favorite character, the witch. Although she appears to be all evil and dark, throughout the story she plays the biggest role in helping Selwyn find the real murderer. Compared to other mystery and suspense books, I would rate Never Trust a Dead Man five stars, because this is a one-of-a-kind-book. It is very entertaining how the author perfectly combines mystery, suspense, humor, and fantasy altogether to make this book very original. I would strongly recommend this book to all the young adults, who are looking for something new and interesting.

This novel was very good. The plot of this book is Sewlyn was convicted of murdering his worst enemy. The village put Sewlyn in Farolds tomb and a witch came for some ingredients and found Sewlyn and listened to his problem. She raised Farold from the dead as a bat. Now Sewlyn and Farold , once great enemies, have to join togather to find the real murderer of Farold. This book would be good for about every age group 5-20.I really liked this book a lot. I liked this book because I could not put it down and it always had me on the edge of my seat. This is the book review for Never Trust a Dead Man by Vivian Vande Velde.
