Product Description At first Doug doesn't believe the rumors about bloodthirsty creatures who are said to have left a trail of amputated victims across the northern woods. Then, he and his younger sister find signs of a mysterious presence in the land behind their home. They are about to meet the Beasties, a "family" of beings with war on their minds--war against the human race! Acclaimed science fiction/fantasy author William Sleator has created a fast-paced treat just right for middle-grade Goosebumps fans.
"This gleefully icky horror show may well leave readers with some soul-searching questions...that resonate long after the cover is closed." --Publishers Weekly

What? September 26, 2008 I wanted so much to like this story. I really did. I'm a fan of William Sleator for young adult literature--maybe the problem is that I'm no longer a teenager. But it seems he gives up on his awesome creative sci-fi to go the green route--which I don't exactly mind. But this novel just comes off as an environmental advocacy with a half-baked plot and weak characters. Good intentions, but no cigar.
Creepy AND thought-provoking July 2, 2008 When Doug and his family move to a house at the edge of a deep forest, things quickly get creepy. Doug and his sister soon find the entrance to a hidden passageway. They meet strange creatures known as beasties who have a mysterious connection to the forest. When Doug discovers the odd brand of plastic surgery performed by the beasties, he is horrified. He sets out to save himself and his sister from the beasties, but soon discovers that there is more to the beasties than meets the eye.
Cool and creepy June 4, 2007 I've always been a fan of William Sleator's writing but his books are not equal and this is one of his best. These beings kidnap loggers and remove some of their limbs and bring them back. They're excelent surgeons among other things. What they do to kids is "interesting" though a little less ambiguity would have been nice. The story starts when 2 kids, a brother and sister get involved with some of them.
The Beasties April 18, 2006 The book The Beasties is the BEST book I have ever read! The Beasties is a book that I loved because it is filled with surprises and parts that made me want to keep reading. Doug and Colette are going to move to an isolated house in the forest for his dad's research on fungus because the forest was being cut down but he didn't notice that there were creatures leaving trails of amputated victims in the forest. Doug's friend Al warns them to stay away from old houses, forests behind old houses, and rundown logging camps, but why? When Doug and Colette get to the house Colette ran toward the forest and said "something moved out there." When she enters the forest in the shadow of the kitchen window lying in a circle of leaves is a book, bat, and ball she ties a ribbon on a stick to mark the spot. Mrs. Sloan there house keeper always wares a mask because something happened to her nose, was it the beasties? The next day Colette went with Doug to the spot were they had found the bat ball and book, and found the ribbon retied and a trapdoor. They went in and discovered a series of tunnels, this is were they meat the beasties. If they don't help they will never be safe again. Does Doug have the guts to help these creatures. Read the book to find out. This book is full of thrilling moments that kept my adrenaline up and running. This is the book that made me like to read, and inspired me to read more by this author.
(...)6th grader January 30, 2006 I am a sixth grader. I think the book The Beasties by William Sleator is a good book. I really liked this horror book a lot. I liked it because it is adventurous and exciting. It is about a boy and his little sister, and their parents. The boy and his family move to an old house near the woods. They move so his father can research fungus and so his mother can paint pictures. My favorite part is at the end when Doug makes a great sacrifice for one of the beasties. However, in the beginning of the story they find something in the woods and the adventure begins.
