Product Description
If an entire nation could seek its freedom, why not a girl? As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom. From acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson comes this compelling, impeccably researched novel that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual.

Pending Review... November 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not a review. I ordered the book and the order was canceled by Amazon with no details. After reading other reviews, I confirmed that I was not the only one who did not receive this book. After reading such excellent reviews on this book (from those who did receive their order), I am anxious as ever to read Chains. Amazon, my review is pending, please send the book so that I may properly review it.
Spectacular November 21, 2008 I think every young student studying the effects of wartime, namely the American Revolution, should read this truly fascinating read that discusses all kinds of independence and revolution. The writing is heartbreaking, beautiful, and yet altogether simple and readable--a potent blend for telling a great story. This is something that is both inspirational and tissue-requiring.
Interesting Read... November 21, 2008 There's not much I can add that the other reviews haven't covered already, but I do like this book a great deal. I highly recommend picking this one up.
Not A Review November 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered this book through Amazon Vine, but it never showed up. When I checked my account, it said the order had been canceled (with no explanation) and that I would not be required to leave a review. Yet it wouldn't let me re-order it, or any other Vine book. And when I went to order my Vine books this week, it said I haven't reviewed this book yet. So . . . what am I to do? I can't properly review it since I never got it, but I have to leave a review in order to keep going with the Vine program.
For now, I give the book 4 stars, since it sounds very good by the description. Eventually I'll order it on my own, and then I'll leave a proper review. Sorry for any confusion, but there isn't anything else I could do.
A look at the Revolutionary War from an entirely new perspective. November 20, 2008 We all learned in school about Paul Revere, the Redcoats, and the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Laurie Halse Anderson's excellent "Chains" tells the story of a young girl, Isabel, and her little sister who lived as slaves during the same time. Isabel observes the twists and turns of the white men's governments while she seeks her own opportunity to regain the freedom that is rightfully hers -- not only were she and her sister legally freed upon the death of her original mistress, but Isabel knows in her heart, her soul, and her head, that there is nothing right about one person owning another. Isabel is a smart, likeable character. The wisdom which seems beyond her years is hard won as a result of her circumstances -- from learning to read as a "priveleged" slave to learning to keep her mouth shut in her new, cruel household. I highly recommend "Chains," and I look forward to the next title in what I hope will be a series of historical novels from the talented Laurie Halse Anderson.
