Needs full pictures or diagrams of projects. Desperately. August 20, 2008 I returned this book because of the lack of adequate pictures of the projects and complete lack of diagrams. For example, there is a baby shawl pattern, but the only visual of the completed object is wrapped around a baby. How am I supposed to knit a shawl (or decide I want to knit it) if I don't know whether it is a triangle, square, or circular shawl? There is no hint in the book! Numerous other projects in the book have the same problem: cute, arty pictures of babies wearing and using the finished product, but no helpful pictures or drawings that show how to construct the project. If you are loking for a coffee table knitting book, this one is fine, but if you are looking for clear easy to follow instructions, do not buy this book.
Beautiful and simple sweaters July 21, 2008 This book is a must have! It contains beautiful but classy knits that looks great on children. And the sweaters fit well too. I made a number of sweaters from the book, but I love the cover sweater best. It's chic and elegant and easy to knit. You only knit one piece. The only reason I only gave four stars is that the book doesn't tell you how to make the ribbon rose "button" and how to attach it to the sweater. I also knitted the stuffed rabbit toy, which was simple, but the finishing directions were too confusing. My rabbit ended up with a floppy head, but still very cute. And, I realized that I should have washed it before stuffing it. It would have been great if the directions had said that.
Very cute! Another great addition to my collection! August 20, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is special indeed! I love the sweater on the cover and it was a fast knit too! Can't wait to try another! As usual, Debbie Bliss has great patterns that make it worth your time to knit!
Great book August 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book has many nice patterns for babies. The cover sweater is very easy to make. You'll love the book.
Beautiful book, beautiful projects July 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was one of the very first pattern books I bought when I had been knitting about year. I found so many projects that I wanted to knit! The book is incredibly gorgeous, and will inspire you to reach for your yarn and needles. I have already finished knitting the Velvet-Trimmed Cardigan for my 3-mo-old and am working on the Beaded Cardigan for my 3-yr-old (although it will NOT be beaded!). I was hoping for more designs for older tots, but what is in there is beautiful, and now I have another baby to knit for!!
If you are a thrifty knitter, or just don't have access to a fine yarn store, I found that Lion Brand Microspun yarn is a perfect substitution for the finer weight Debbie Bliss yarn used on many of the patterns.
I am an advanced beginner, and I don't find the patterns too hard. They are challenging, but definitely doable. Many of the designs are knit on size 2/3 needles, so don't buy this book if you are looking for quick projects. On the other hand, I think that a finer gauge looks better because it is more proportional on a little baby/toddler. Another reviewer mentioned fumbling through the directions. When I have questions, I call our local yarn store. They are always happy to talk me through a new skill.
All in all, this is an incredible book. I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to take a little time to make something beautiful.
