 Love her yarn, hate her patterns September 15, 2008
I absolutely love Debbie Bliss' yarns. I would love to dive into a vat of cashmerino and go for a swim.
The first thing that bugged me about Baby Knits is that the cover shows a baby in a scarf. Only someone with a death wish for their infant would tie a scarf around their baby's neck.
The second thing that bugged me about Baby Knits is that every pattern knits up too dang big. I knitted the boatneck baby sweater with Debbie Bliss yarn (yes, I checked the gauge) and it was HUGE. I went on to knit the little cap, faithfully checking the gauge. When I was finished, the cap fit ME. When I complained to other knitters, they nodded sagely and said, "Bliss' patterns always run large."
So, beware. This book contains cute-cute-cute baby patterns sized for adults

There are some cute ideas in this book, but I have yet to make anything. Bliss' yarn is so overpriced. While I realize you do not have to use her yarn, it makes all the patterns way over the top- If I had taken a second look before buying, I would have left it on the shelf.

I bought this for my sister who loves to knit. The pictures are darling and she says that the paterns are relatively easy, but the finished products look very complicated and special. I reccomend this book for people who are looking for gifts for knitters! She loved it.
Great learning tool November 13, 2007
This book allows you to progress step by step from beginner to fairly expert, garment by garment. The explanations and pictures are very helpful. The patterns and gauges are given for Debbie Bliss's own line of cotton yarn - I used another brand of washable baby wool yarn and it came out beautifully. The baby models in this book are adorable.

Title says it: if you're a total beginner and you want to learn to knit by actually knitting something useful, this book is there for you. If you're a more advanced knitter, you won't like it that much - but then, if you're advanced, you won't buy a book for beginners and so you can't complain. And that's why I rate this book 5/5. (If you want a book for pre-intermediate level, get "Simply Baby" Simply Baby: 20 Special Handknits for Baby's First Two Years by the same author.)
This book combines a knitting step-by-step handbook and a pattern book. The first patterns are extremely easy - and I DO mean "extremely" - something for the beginners to start with and to make them believe in themselves. Some more complicated patterns are then introduced, taking the beginner to higher levels (again: consider buying "Simply Baby" as well).
Although this book may be useful for other people as well, I absolutely recommend it to those of you who have just learned you're pregnant and want to do something for your baby. Having knitted some of the projects, you will be able to start knitting some more difficult ones. Good luck!
