Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Insightful and thought-provoking conversations exploring religion—and atheism—from diverse spiritual, cultural and political perspectives, as heard on the Peabody Award-winning radio show Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

One of the most popular programs on public radio, Fresh Air is carried by over 500 stations and in Europe on the World Radio Network. Each week, nearly 5 million listeners tune in to hear probing and reflective interviews about arts, culture and politics.

This new collection features interviews with an array of guests with diverse perspectives, from evangelical to atheistic, and the many places in between: Religious scholars Bart D. Ehrman and Karen Armstrong, scientist Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), novelist Tim LaHaye, geneticist and evangelical Christian Francis Collins, Saturday Night Live's Julia Sweeney (Letting Go of God), and many more. As in previous Fresh Air collections, Terry Gross brings out the best in her guests with a variety of compelling interviews.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The more serious side of Terry Gross's Fresh Air interviews.   September 13, 2008
I love the previous volumes in the CD series of interviews from the NPR program Fresh Air with Terry Gross, which consisted of classic interviews with Film Directors (Martin Scorsese's interview sticks in my mind) and also classic comedians. I often play the short interviews for friends.

This latest volume of interviews - ranging in length from three to 15 minutes - is much different. Firstly, though Gross has been hosting Fresh Air for 25 years (it went national in 1985), the 15 interviews here were aired between 2002 and 2008 (as recent as March) so the breadth of her interviewees is limited. And this is a mostly serious collection with only the slightest bit of humor in the interview with author Michael Wex about the use of Jewish slang (where you'll hear words you wouldn't expect to hear on commercial radio stations).

I can't think of a focus on faith and religion not covered here. There is a former nun who lost her faith, a paraplegic professor who found his. There is discussion of Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism. But none of the interviews are ones I wanted to return to like the other volumes.

As an interviewer, Gross is up there with the best. She asks probing questions, while drawing the interviewee into her confidence. And she does her research! So, if I was rating Gross and her questions, I'd give the volume five stars. It's the selection included which dropped my rating two stars. This is, unfortunately, not the best of a wonderful series of highlights.

I'm hoping that Highbridge will compile a collection of the interviews that Gross has done with Pop Culture icons over the last 25 years, some of which became historic moments in themselves. (Can any true Fresh Air listener forget her interview with Gene Simmons, lead singer of Kiss?). That would be a collect that could be referred back to often as the "stage & Screen" and "Stars" volumes did. And how about "Musicians" collection?. This could cover the change in musical styles over the last quarter century and would be valuable for use in schools and libraries.
