Product Description
When Matthew Morgan, handsome gay architect, rescues Lucas Denholme from a gang of thugs late one night, his orderly life is turned upside down. He becomes the young mans unwilling champion, getting drawn into Lucas struggles at home and at school. Haunted by memories of the past, having sworn off love and intimacy, Matthew resists becoming involved. Lucas, however, is determined not only to pursue his dream of a career in the theatre, but he is equally determined to forge a place for himself in Matthews heart. The present and the past intersect in this compelling drama and bittersweet coming-of-age story.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Learning to love is tough, if you've never experienced it yourself   July 14, 2008
Matthew Morgan, a handsome gay architect in his late 20's, first met 17 year old Lucas when Matthew emerged from a gay bar in a seedy area of Seattle, and saw a group of bikers gaybashing the high school junior. Despite his usual resolve to not "get involved" with anyone, in any capacity, he somehow was compelled to intercede, taking part of the beating himself in rescuing Lucas. In addition to the age difference, they seemed to have nothing in common, other than a physical attraction to each other, but Matthew soon found out that Lucas came from a highly dysfunctional home, consisting of a surly maid/nanny and his emotionally distant, overbearing tyrant of a father, a powerful and rich lawyer. Lucas dream was to be an actor, but his father would not even let him explore that possibility as an extracurricular activity in high school, threatening to throw him out and disown him. When his father found out that Lucas did indeed star in a high school play, he beat him viciously, causing Matthew again to come to his rescue, this time by helping him become an emancipated minor and letting him finish out his final year of school while living with Matthew.

In flashbacks throughout the novel, the author gives us Matthew's backstory, which make it clear he also came from an abusive home, having essentially been discarded by his irresponsible hippie parents, and raised by a strict and unloving grandmother, who tried to discourage Matthew's plans to attend college and pushed him toward a life of manual labor, like his grandfather. While he was thankful for his grandparents providing a place for him to live, he never really experienced the love a family usually provides, and could see Lucas as a kindred spirit in this respect. However, while he was very fond of the young man, as well as sexually attracted to him, he saw himself as emotional incapable of a loving relationship, and was convinced that Lucas would likewise be unable to commit to him.

The story takes us through Lucas' senior year, at his reactions and feelings about Matthew's occasional seeming indifference toward him, arguments based on Matthew's jealousy over parts of Lucas' life apart from him, and finally an abrupt separation ... and eventual unlikely meeting again, that makes up the emotional climax of this very well-written (though lengthy, at over 400 pages) coming-of-age romance. I give it four stars out of five.
