Product Description Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

Take it for what it is . . . and what it is is GOOD! July 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read some very positive reviews and some very scathing reviews of this book. I have been a Christian pretty much all my life. Let me begin by saying that this book is not the Bible, nor does it ever claim to be. It should not be read as the ultimate, absolute, and infallible truth that only Scripture can ever be. It was written by a flawed, fallen human being, just like the rest of us. I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book the other day, but I devoured it. And as soon as I finished it, I started reading it again. I have only done that one other time in my entire life. There was so much to absorb that one reading was simply not enough. The finer points of theology presented in the book can be argued until we are all blue in the face. Ultimately, what I know is that it made me think, made me question my picture of God, and made me want to know Him better and more fully. Is it perfect? No- God didn't write it. But as I try to place myself in Mackenzie's shoes, I find that I want God to be my "Papa" too. And that can't be anything other than good.
Powerful! July 22, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a Christian almost my entire life. I graduated from a Christian college and have been actively involved in many aspects of my church, but this book opened my eyes to a new perspective on God and my relationship with Him. The concept of the Trinity becomes so clear and our purpose here on Earth is explained. I would recommend this book to anyone and every one!
The audio will be very hard to listen to on your iPod July 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This review is just about the audio CD version of "The Shack". I just can't believe they didn't take the time to give each track a song name, Artist, and Album name. That means the 7 cds will appear in iTunes with just "Track 1" as the track name and no Artist and Album name. This will make it very hard to listen to on your iPod unless you manually enter in this info.
Awesome, Compelling, Challenging, Life-changing Mystical magic July 22, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am writing this shorter review, not because there are so few great ones! Some of the best are by Eric, Dahn, Dan, Dena, Home-Schooler and Tim. Most are telling the story plot. Many are a bit too long. So I shall focus upon the characters as persons and their personalities.
The family of Mackenzie Allen Phillips includes his wife Nan, the children, Jon, Tyler, Josh, Kate, and youngest, Missy. I watched the interview of the author, William P Young on Today by Ann Curry. His children were pictured as a large happy family. Jon & Tyler are grown-ups so Mack's weekend trip into the woods of Oregon included his three younger children. Nan stayed with her sister's relatives for a visit.
Somewhere along the way as he drove his children on the state highways, he opened again the short, type-written note which simply said: "It's been a while. I've missed you. I'll be at the shack next weekend if you want to get together." signed Papa... This seemed to cause a Great Sadness to come upon Mack's shoulders. He did not know whether it was from his Father, long parted by cruel circumstances; or by the name by which Nan, his wife referred to God as PAPA! There was no address, stamp, or postmark as for mail; only a short note in a small envelope addressed to Mack.
Mack swapped cars with his close friend Willie to have a four-wheel drive into the mountain trails through the woods of Oregon. When they came to their campsite the children got into canoes on the Wallowah Lake near area Multanoma Falls. When Josh and Kate went out too far their canoe overturned. After Mack was caught up in rescueing them, getting them into his canoe, they hurried back to the camp site. As they searched for Missy and asked everyone if they had seen her, they realized she was missing!
They phoned the forest Ranger and he in turn phoned the local Police. Soon there was a massive group of people incuding nearby campers searching for Missy; even the FBI came from Seattle and Portland using heliocopters!
When it was certain she likely had been kidnapped, the police found an obvious pen with the name, "Little Lady Killer" near some rocks on the trail. This was a familiar ID for the serial killer of other girls the same age.
Someone sighted nearby the trail an old green, military truck. Mack found evidence of Missy's red dress, all soaked in blood in a old dilapidated run-down shack in the woods. After spending time with his family including Nan, he decided to go alone into the mountains to answer the strange note from Papa.
When he arrived at the shack, he was greeted at the door by a large African-American Lady dressed as the Cook, or House Keeper! "Look at you all grown up! Mackenzie Allen Phillips!" With a big smothering, hug, she ushers him in. She calls herself, Elousia! "Are you meaning you are Papa?" Next he meets the little wirey Asian Lady who looks like she is from Northern China, either Nepalese or Mongolian. She is dressed in colorful garments of plain jeans, with a many bright colored blouse, with pairs of gloves, light weight cloth and rubber ones folded in her belt... she looked like the Gardener smelling like odors of numerous flowers, gardenia, jasmine and the odor of his Mother's perfume! She calls herself Sarayu. Then he sees a man who looks to be in his thirties, who stood a little shorter than Mack himself. "I try to keep things fixed up around here. I enjoy working with my hands."
"You look as if you're from the Middle East, maybe Arab." Mack guessed.
"Actually, I am a step-brother of that great family I am Hebrew, to be exact, from the House of Judah."
"Then you are..." Mack was suddenly staggered by his own realization. "Then you are..."
"Jesus? Yes, You may call me that if you like. But my Mother called me Jeshua..." After their identities were revealed they agreed that they were all equally God! With Gratitude and Enthusiam, I am Retired Chaplain Fred W. Hood
Trash! July 22, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read it. I underlined biblical truths until the introduction of, "Wisdom". No judgement? Can't underline that! Don't forget, "The Shack" is fiction, folks, and I for one am very offended my God has been reduced to a short-order cook and that the lead character calls Jesus, "Ugly!" This is accepting to all you 5-starers?!!!! Forget how I feel about the portrayal of His Spirit! I trashed it (The Shack) lest it get into the hands of a Sunday Morning Christian that has never done a serious study of the Bible; or, into the hands of a (as a result of reading this book) "new convert," less they look at life or worst yet, read the Holy Writ through the impression left them by the Shack! Do you want the truth? Do you want to learn the emencity of God's love for YOU and all His creation? Do you truly want to meet God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Do you want to read a truly amazing book? READ THE HOLY BIBLE - ANY TRANSLATION. Now THAT will transform lives - maybe even YOURS!
