Product Description "An ingenious simplicity and grace mark the first-person telling of the story of eleven-year-old Rinko and her Japanese family in Berkeley, California. Times are hard for everyone in 1935, but being Japanese is for Rinko an added burden. . . . Compared with the many worldly-wise contemporary book heroines, Rinko in her guilelessness is genuine and refreshing, and her worries and concerns seem wholly natural, honest and convincing."--The Horn Book.

Five Stars August 27, 2007 I read each page of this book and was captivated by the intense empathy the author demonstrated to the Japanese American. Japanese American's love America and have experience racism, bigotry, and cruelty. Aunt Waka tells Rinko, she could never live in a land that treated her as a foreigner. Rinko is encouraged by her Aunt Waka to "do her best", "never forget her Japanese heritage", and "to remember her Grandparents in Japan". Aunt Waka and Uncle Kanda fight intensely to persuade both Cal and Rinko to gain a college education, be competitive, have faith, and dream of the future. The story ends with a surreal connection between Aunt Waka, self actualization example and Rinkos realization that Aunt Waka practice what she preach. Rinko chooses to remember Aunt Waka before and after rather than Mr. Starr.
Papa and Uncle Kanda confront Mr. Wilbur Starr and tell him that "he should not be afraid of fair competition." Uncle Kanda invests his money to open a garage. The friendship saves the family, as the economic depression begins to dryup cash. This is an amazing miracle of love and faith.
The dream of Japan, the beauty of the culture, heroism, transcendant love, and generational connectedness is worthy of five stars. American's ache for tight knit connectedness that the Japanese culture offers.
I plan on reading all of Yoshiko Uchida's books. So many life changing events are described in these books.
kid's review by Isabella May 31, 2007 A book called 'A Jar of Dreams' is about an 11 year Japanese girl living in Califorina with a younger brother named Joji and an older brother named Cal.And her name is Rinko.
In late July her Aunt Waka comes from Japan to stay until late August. She teaches her whole family how to admire thier Japanese cultre.
Rinko does not want Aunt Waka to come in first place. Will she change her mind about Aunt Waka once she meets her?
In the end when Aunt Waka has to leave,Rinko becomes proud of her Japanese culture.
I thought this book is a great read, for the whole class or just a small reading group,in an 8-10 age group. I give it 4 stars out of 5.

If you are looking for a good book this is the one for you. This is a book about a girl that finds out that her aunt is going to visit her. Her aunt does many things with her that change her life. Here are some things you should know before you read this book. 1.This book is about a Japanese family. 2.The girl's name is Rinko. 3.The aunt's name is Aunt Waka. That is all I'm going to tell you. But one more thing. This book tells you a bit about what a Japanese family was like when Japan was in economic trouble. That's why I thik you should read this book.
