Both lame and blind December 27, 2008 I first became aware of Michael and his wife's endeavors through reading a cover story in the Unitarian Universalist WORLD magazine in 2006. I was disappointed with the article and not too impressed with meeting Michael in person either.
Michael fails to discuss in any depth his transformation from a believer in a young universe to a believer in an old universe. You would at least think he would address some of the arguements put forth by creationists and intelligent design folks.
I read the book BEYOND NATURAL SELECTION prior to meeting Michael in person and think its comments about chaos theory prove useful to those of us who are trying to understand the processes going on within our universe, but having been raised in a strict fundamentalist Christian background, I found it amusing that Darwin was somewhat chagrined with the sophistication of electric eels.
As far as Michael's allegation that speaking in tongues is good for the soul, I would have agreed with him 35 years ago when such an idea meant a lot to me. Apparently Michael does not recognize that speaking in tongues is a rather controversial practice within Christendom.
Einstein once stated that science without religion was lame and religion without science was blind. I do not think he would necessarily use the book of Revelation to explain the theory of relativity or try to force a synthesis between science and religion, as Michael seems to be doing.
I commend Michael for not owning any real estate, but being somewhat nomadic, like the Rechabites discussed in the Hebrew scriptures. I just wish he had a more compelling story to tell than the story of evolution. Maybe he needs to re-read Joseph Campbell's book THE POWER OF MYTH if he has not already done so.
Should be taught in all schools December 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is amazing and can't be digested in one sitting. I had heard and seen the author's presentation and needed to learn more. It's worth starting a study group because the facts the author presents are real and startling and their impact worth pondering and discussing. I may just do that.
Reinventing the Human November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Dowd's book is a powerful message about care of the Earth community. Standing on the shoulders of Thomas Berry and a score of others, he inspires us again with the big context and offers practical ways we humans can reinvent ourselves to do our vocation of care. "Thank God for Evolution" is not just another read but is a invitation to participate in the great work of our age. I recommend this book to every youth and adult who seeks to be profoundly educated.
Mother of all books on creationism and evolution November 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A book that has three pages of promises to just about any possible religious, scientific and secular group, must have something to say. I have attended a lecture of Michael Dowd and watched the DVD of his introductory talk. This is a passionate preacher for " God and evolution." The book is interesting and I trust that all the scientific data is correct. I would recommend the thoughts and challenges to any thinker of our time. Not sure that everyone who might get into this book would be open to a change of mind set but give the man a chance and you could be very informed and certainly more open to both God in your life and the role your faith plays in the world events. A mind set that takes in the whole of creation would be a very important concept for power people in the political sphere.
Hope November 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is about hope. It is about putting the arguments between science and religion behind us. Science tells us how. Religion gives it meaning. Both are equally important. Knowledge does not rule out faith AND faith does not rule out knowledge. This book is about learning not just to tolerate our differences but to embrace them as the key to our survival. This book is about appreciating the sanctity of death as a natural, creative, and necessary part of life. Finally, this book is about living with integrity in the here and now and thereby making your life a positive force in the world.
