Product Description The Hare and the Tortoise. The Lion and the Mouse. The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The Jackdaw and the Borrowed Plumage. For generations, these titles and scores of others have been synonymous with the best in the timeless literature of childhood. Although he was probably as mythical as the tales attributed to him, the legendary name of Aesop has been associated for thousands of years with an enduringly popular collection of enchanting fables. In the lavish tradition of Chronicle Books' classic illustrated edition of A Child's Garden of Verses, this delightful selection of Aesop's parables--some of them universally recognizable, others refreshingly unfamiliar--is magnificently complemented by illustrations taken from a variety of antique editions. Among the artists represented in this superbly designed and beautifully reproduced new volume are Arthur Rackham, Thomas Bewick, Walter Crane, Charles Robinson, and Randolph Caldecott. Fully captioned illustrations, a complete bibliography of sources, and a set of biographical notes on the artists make this stunning compendium an ideal gift for any child as well as a valutable companion for collectors of fine illustrated books.

Flawless execution of timeless classics July 17, 2008 I don't know what I can add, really.
I bought this book based on reviews already posted, having compared it to about a dozen other Aesop's Fables compilations available on Amazon. This one stood out far and above the competition in the reviews, and it did not disappoint. From the binding, the paper, printing quality, to the actual format and selection of artwork (including a lot of familiar images from the edition of Aesop's I had as a child thirty-five years go), top-notch all the way.
Basically, all those other glowing reviews? Spot on.
aesop's fables - a kids must have May 20, 2008 It was one of my favorite books as as a child and is very dream come true that my child asks for it to be read every night at bedtime. A nice collection of stories in a sturdy hardcover format. Plenty of morals for all! Great illustrations of animals on every page.
Classic illustration and very wonderful coloring February 27, 2008 This is a good book to have for the children's library or your own library. The illustrations brought back memories of my youth when I would sit down in the library and open an old musty book of Alice in Wonderland. I liked to admire all the fine line detailing the artist would apply to a single illustration. This edition was done using modern artists using that old style and I fell they managed to emmulate the classic style very well.
Aesop's Fables: A Classic Illustrated Edition (Classic Illustrated) February 14, 2008 I was disappointed that the stories hadn't been re-written in today's language. I wanted to read it to a young child and the language detracts from her understanding the messages.
Awesome January 22, 2008 This book is great for children, young ones especially because it instills in them values they will need growing up. Every child should have this book in their library growing up.
