3 out of 5 stars Could have been better   August 14, 2008

Unfortunately, I am not pleased with this release of the Orthodox Study Bible. (And it's not because I also have translated the Greek Septuagint.)
My main reason is this:
The editors have totally renumbered the verses in the Old Testament, making it practically impossible to follow along and compare with other editions.
In my edition, I informed the readers that "The LXX omits this verse." This makes it easier to follow along, for the non-orthodox reader, who wants to compare this edition with what they are familiar with, to learn more about the Septuagint. Books like 1 Samuel now are virtually impossible to compare one translation with another.
Other than that, it is nice to have a contemporary Bible that uses the Greek Septuagint as the Old Testament text.

5 out of 5 stars Christ is in our midst!   August 12, 2008

The publication of the complete Orthodox Study Bible is indeed a most important event for all English-speaking Eastern Orthodox and other Liturgical Christians of the One True Apostolic Tradition (Old Catholics, Roman Catholics - and the Eastern Churches in Communion with them, Independent Catholics, Anglicans/Episcopalians, etc.) The scholars involved in this project have obviously laboured long and hard, the resulting translation being reverent and literal, the notes informative, and the general presentation beautiful. As Metropolitan Archbishop of the Ancient Orthodox Eparchy of Maryland, I am well-pleased to give this edition of the Holy Bible my Most Sacred Patriarchal and Apostolic Benediction as well as my absolute highest praise and recommendation to all.

5 out of 5 stars How Orthodoxy saved the world   August 2, 2008

The old testament portions of this book are especially a joy to read in modern American English. I am pleased that this group, in the spirit of Wycliffe, have endeavored to make this available to all readers. Orthodoxy has been long overdue for "their version of the Bible" and I hope this will impact all Christianity and becomes a "the version" to have in your library. With the comfort of rational translation of the original manuscripts you will spend countless hours enjoying this rendition.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh translation of the Septuagint text   August 1, 2008

The Orthodox Study Bible, created by The Orthodox Study Bible Old Testament Project, uses the New King James Version of the Bible as the basis for a fresh translation of the Septuagint text. The Septuagint is the Greek version of the Bible used by Christ, the Apostles, and the early church.

Still waiting for an official, full Orthodox translation of the original Greek into English from the scholars in Constantinople or Greece.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay   July 31, 2008

Without a preview, I splurged and got the leather edition of this Bible, having come from the hard-cover Orthodox Study Bible: New Testament & Psalms. The NT was chock-full of helpful notes and strictly Orthodox commentary, and words from the Church Fathers and Saints. The icons are beautiful; rich colors on nice paper. This Bible included many helpful articles on the Orthdox church, too.

However, this (Complete) Orthodox Study Bible doesn't have as many notes and I noticed that many of the notes from the NT version were missing. I expected lots of notes in the Old Testament but there aren't as many as I wished. In fact, even the tone of the notes is changed: while the notes in the NT & Psalms read very Orthodox, the notes in the complete edition have been sanitized to take out explicit Orthodox references. That's really a shame. Some of the extra articles that were in the NT are missing, too.

The icons in the Orthodox Study Bible feature some of the ones in the NT edition and some new ones just for this edition. The printing of these is not as nice; many are very dark and the colors are muddy. The icons chosen don't really represent the treasures that exist in Orthodox iconography.

While I appreciate the larger type size used throughout, the typesize is reduced in the articles, so the pages are printed almost edge to edge (especially in the extra articles), making for a very long reading line length with almost no white space, so pages are hard to read. The book is heavy and could have used a stiffer/thicker leather cover.

Of course, the real reason to get this edition is that the Old Testament is a Septuagint translation, which is easy and enjoyable to read, and preserves the original meaning of the OT books. The books in the OT are placed in the order favored by the Church Fathers; that is, the apocryphal books are interspersed among the other books. The article on the formation of this Bible is helpful in understanding the Orthodox view of Scripture.
