The CD-ROM Not as Good as Previous Edition September 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you're buying the 4th edition of the American Heritage because you're looking for a CD-ROM dictionary, and you remember your experience with the LAST edition of the American Heritage's CD-ROM, don't waste your time with this one. I just bought this combo for specifically that reason, while still owning the 3rd edition hardcover, which was in excellent condition. My old CD-ROM was damaged, and I needed a replacement. The CD-ROM for the MERRIAM-WEBSTER dictionary ALONE costs as much as this print-edition/CD-ROM combination, so I opted for the old familiar product. After reading a couple of the customer reviews that criticized the new CD-ROM, I was a bit hesitant. Mainly I was concerned over the criticism that this new edition didn't provide a reverse-look-up feature (for when you remember the words included in the definition, but you can't remember the term itself; a very useful feature if you use words a lot). I was incredulous that this essential search capability would be eliminated from the NEWER edition. I mean, come on: software EVOLVES, doesn't it? A step backwards in sophistication is contrary to the general trend in technology. Though I felt some doubt while reading the customer reviews that discussed this omission, I finally resolved to ignore them and ordered this coupling of the printed and CD-ROM editions.
Now I can tell you directly, if you looked at this bargain combo, and considered the printed edition a bonus to what you were really looking for, then let me warn you off, with no uncertainty: the other customer who'd stated that the reverse-look-up feature was nonexistent is absolutely correct. I thoroughly looked over the CD-ROM, and this feature isn't provided this time out. Amazingly remiss for a modern edition, don't you think? I'm telling you, if you already have the 3rd edition of The American Heritage Dictionary, and you're buying this for the CD-ROM, don't do it. According to the product description of the MERRIAM-WEBSTER CD-ROM Edition (which is unabridged), it includes thirteen powerful search options. I wish I had gone with my initial instincts and bought that one instead. I can't even imagine what the other search options would be.
A thorough Study of word June 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A great buy of one of the best all around dictionaries on the face of the earth, the CD ROM loaded on the computer puts it all at a few clicks of a mouse.
Graduation present June 13, 2008 Having bought this for a Bar Mitzvah and then another copy for myself, I thought it an appropriate gift for my nephew's recent high school graduation. He seemed delighted to be able to take both the print and CD-ROM versions with him to college.
Enjoyable reading experience June 2, 2008 I am not a native English speaker but I do like English language. I like the way the American Heritage Dictionary describes those words, familiar to me or not. Helpful to people who funcy English but not fully fluent.
