Now my boyfriend and I are broken up, half the school hates me, and I'm in deep trouble. Goals: Get my boyfriend back, figure out who could have done this, and clear my name! Also, pass history.

The Compulsive Reader's Reviews October 15, 2008 You can tell just by glancing at Madison MacDonald's Friendverse page that her life is pretty fantastic. She's got two best friends, a great new boyfriend, the lead role in the school play, and she's headed to the Galapagos Islands for Spring Break. But when she comes back, she gets a major shock when she finds that everyone hates her--all because her Friendverse profile was hacked, her boyfriend is now her ex, and everyone's dirty secrets spilled. Mad is nothing but resilient, and with the aid of her friends and perhaps even the cute guy she met on vacation, she sets out to find out who hacked her--with some surprising results. Teens who are addicts to Facebook and MySpace won't help but empathize with Mad and the "horror" of being hacked. The novel, despite the drama of hurtful rumors and gossip, maintains a pretty light tone, and is full of humor and angst. Readers may feel apprehension towards Mad's somewhat pretentious ways, but they won't be able to keep themselves for cheering for her as she becomes aware of the pain her whispered words carry when written for everyone to see, and begins to realize what some people truly think of her.
Top 8 is one of my Top 8 debut novels! October 15, 2008 16 year old Madison MacDonald has just gotten back from her vacation to find out that her Friendverse (like MySpace and FaceBook) profile has just been hacked (GASP!) and the hacker has posted up very bad pictures of Mads and posted up horrible secrets that have hurt her friends online! And commented and sent rude meassages to her friends causing her boyfriend to break up with her leaving her practically friendless. After explaining what's happend to her BFFs, Ruth, Lisa, and Schuyler; Madison decides to track down the culprit and bring them to justice so she can clear her name and win back her guy.
Top 8 is an awesome! It is a very funny and a wonderful debut for Ms. Katie Finn. As the story unfolds, Mads learns how painful gossip can be and who her true friends really are. Also, the kinda cute guy mentioned in the beginning from her tip turns out to live in the town right next to her and who isn't just kinda cute. And it's not all about the looks for him, it's his interests like gleato and classic movies and... well, you'll have to read the book to find out!
At first I didn't think Top 8 would have a lot of mystery but happily, it proved me wrong. It makes you think about what motives the suspects could possibly have for doing such a horrible crime (or at least that's what Madison thinks) and when you finally find out, it might just leave you stunned like it did for me. As Sherlock Holmes once said, "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth."
In the book, it shows Madison's and someone else's profile and I thought it was really original. Also the pictures on the spine were really clever and I just loved it! Especially the last one. And, the quotes and songs at the beginning of each chapter were really creative too.
I totally recommend this book to MySpace and Facebook addicts and mystery lovers too. Round of applause for Katie Finn for writing such a great debut!
Pick Up Top 8 October 4, 2008 During Spring Break, Madison MacDonald visits the Galapagos Island with her parents and younger brother. Though Ecuador is cooler than she expected it to be, Madison, without her phone or her laptop, feels totally out of touch with her friends. The second she gets home, she rushes to her room to check her voicemail and her email. When she tries to log on to her favorite networking site, she finds out that her profile has been hacked - ROYALLY. The hacker changed her picture and every single detail on the page, then sent rude messages to her friends, her classmates, and her boyfriend, who then broke up with her. Yikes!
Mads is determined to find out who hacked her page and why. Along the way, she rehearses for the school musical (a contemporary version of Hamlet), updates her profile, screams at her finnicky laptop, rolls her eyes at her little brother, and tries to regain the trust of her friends. Ultimately, she realizes who her true friends really are, and learns how hurtful gossip and lies can be. She also kind of falls for another guy, a boy who appreciates fine films, good ice cream, and the simple things in life. (I cheered when he encouraged her to watch Charade, one of my favorite films.)
Madison's profile appears a few times throughout the book, complete with profile pictures of her friends. These pictures are not only next to their comments, but also on the spine of the book. Quotes from books, films, and/or songs start every chapter, noting Madison's mood and current inspiration (or frustration!)
Those who are addicted to MySpace and Facebook will instantly click with Top 8. With its social networking tie-ins and its likable narrator, Katie Finn's debut novel is timely.

TOP 8 was a book that I didn't want to put down once I started reading.
Madison MacDonald is stuck going on a trip to the Galapagos Islands with her family for spring break. She's not thrilled about it at all. She's recently started dating Justin Williamson (seventeen days) and doesn't want to leave him or her friends. And to make matters worse, she can't take her cell phone or laptop with her because they'd be useless.
The trip turns out to be okay, and there was even a sort of cute boy about her own age on the trip, but the whole time she just wanted to get home. Had she known what was awaiting her return, she might have changed her mind.
The minute she got home, she ran to her temperamental laptop to check her Friendverse account. She can't believe what she sees. She's so stunned that she reboots her laptop to make sure she logged onto the correct profile. Friendverse is the latest in the Facebook/MySpace trends. Someone has totally changed her profile! The photos that are uploaded are the most unflattering possible. And the comments she's received from her friends leave her flabbergasted. The things that they're saying she's said about everyone. This just can't be right! And Justin has broken up with her!
Madison calls an emergency session with her three best friends: Schuyler, Liz, and especially Ruth. After struggling to explain the situation, all three friends believe her and vow to help her discover the culprit. Madison can't imagine why anyone would do such a thing to her. The four girls come up with a list of two possible perpetrators: Kittson Pearson, who is in charge of the junior prom and has just stolen her boyfriend, and Connor Atkins, who has lost the student secretary election to Madison.
Madison vows to discover the evildoer and to get Justin back. But what she doesn't count on is running into the sort of cute boy from her trip. He's not just sort of cute, he's really cute, and his family lives in the next town over!
Madison is far from perfect and comes to realize her faults by the end of the story. The things her friends accuse her of saying are true, in a way. But she doesn't deserve the headaches that the hacker sets her up for.
TOP 8 moves so quickly that you will find yourself determined to finish the book in one sitting. I thought I had the culprit figured out early on, but I was totally wrong in my assumptions! Ms. Finn wrote an amazing first novel. Having enjoyed this as much as I did, I can't wait to see what her future books will bring!
