Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
As conflict and cooperation among states turn to an ever greater extent to economic issues, this fully updated and expanded second edition presents a comprehensive exploration of the legal foundations of the international economy. In it, Professor Andrews Lowenfeld examines the current status of the law, and explores the origins, political tensions and development of outcomes that are often difficult to comprehend.
The book covers all the major elements of economic law in the international arena including the World Trade Organization and its antecedents; dumping, subsidies, and other devices that alter the market; the International Monetary System, including the collapse of the Bretton Woods system; the debt of developing countries; the law of foreign direct investment, including changing perceptions of the rights of host states and multinational enterprises; and economic sanctions. The book also contains chapters on competition law, environmental law, and new chapters on intellectual property and the various forms of arbitration; demonstrating how these subjects fit into the framework of international economic law.
Professor Lowenfeld brings to his task a lifetime of practice and teaching experience to produce a book that will be of use to international lawyers and non-specialists alike.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to use as a reference   June 6, 2007
I acquired this book at a time of acute need of material about WTO, but I now regret my haste. I can't yet testify about how satisfying the book is as a read-through, but as a reference it is dismal. The index is way too coarsely-grained for a book of these spatial and fiscal dimensions. I tried to find information about export restraints under WTO, but there isn't any index entry. Nor is there one about "vertical export restraints", a topic relevant to the transition from GATT to WTO. I couldn't find any discussion of these topics in the main text, either. The main text fails to include a discussion of relevant WTO caselaw on export restraints from 2001 (book's copyright is 2002). Nor does the book mention the Kyoto Protocol at all, despite the KP's obviously economic character and the potential for conflicts with the WTO. In fact, the entire subject of treaty conflicts seems to be missing. Do, do check the index to see if it meets your needs before you shell out for this book.

NOTE ADDED 2008/06/06: My review relates to the book's first edition, and I haven't yet seen the revised one. But as of this date, Amazon facilitates searching only the first edition. I hope the new edition has remedied some of the faults I mention, but I recommend you do more than hope: find a copy of the book and check it before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Text...   February 23, 2006

Lowenfeld does a great job here. He manages to explain how the World Trade Organization works as a seamless entity. His explanations of how GATT, TRIPS, the Dispute settlement body and the IMF all work are unparalleled in their clarity. This is a huge book, and is full of amazing analysis of international trade and the underlying economic reasons for the laws. Weather you are interested in globalization, or more interested in protecting developing nations, this book is for you. It is impartial and fair on all counts - presenting arguments for and against all controversial topics. I was required to read some for work purposes, but read the rest because Lowenfeld is a great writer and makes this subject worth learning about.

Thank you Mr. Lowenfeld.
