What a Debut! November 25, 2008 This was a great book. I'm not a prolific reviewer. I tend to only write reviews for those books that I really encourage others to read because I enjoyed them so much. This is one of them.
This is the first novel by writer Lesley Davis. A sci-fi lesfic book, set in the city of Chastilian. The city is in the grips of a criminal underground that no one can stop, except the Sentinels.
The Sentinels are guardians of the city. The city has an army of sentinals who hide in plain sight during the day,in everyday jobs, and they protect the city at night. They are helped by "the Sighted", others who help the Sentinels know where trouble lies.
By day, Pagan Osborne works for Ronchetti Security, installing security protection. The business is owned by Pagan, her sister Melina, and her sister's partner Rogue. Rogue and Melina raised Pagan and Pagan has folowed in Rogue's footsteps by being a Sentinal. Melina is one of "the Sighted".
Pagan meets Erith Baylor while installing security. Erith hides a secret and when Pagan learns that secret she risks everything to protect her.
This is a book filled with secret passageways, fun devices that Rogue has invented to give the Sentinels an advantage, and I found myself wishing I could play with some of those great toys. The author exhibits a great sense of imagination and humor in her writing. The tools she has the characters using are very "James Bondish". There are great fight scenes and I almost expected to see "Pow!" "Zap!" "Bam!" written, just like the old Batman and Robin series. I mean that in a very fun way. The book has tense moments...but through it all you'll root for our superheros!
Have fun with this. I can't wait for the next one. This book truly deserves a sequel.
truth behind the mask November 13, 2008 Great character developement. One of the best written stories from a 1st time writer I have read in a long time. Send me more. Not usually into Sci-fi but really like this.
If Batman were a woman or Dark Angel were a lesbian November 10, 2008
This really is a fantastic storyline. If you enjoy Batman or Dark Angel, you'll enjoy this one -- provided you don't mind really poor dialogue. It's unfortunate that the editors didn't help with this - really unfortunate. The storyline is so very good, and the characters so well developed, this had the potential to be a five star -- if only the dialogue wasn't so awkward, strained, forced to sound casual when there is nothing casual about these characters.
Brilliant New Author September 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
From the moment I first opened this novel and was introduced to the world of the Sentinals, I was hooked. The Author captured me with her ability to bring these characters to life in a realistic world. The mix of love, innocence, devotion, loyalty, honor, suspense, danger and bravery is complex in its entirity yet simple in its execution. Davis, in her debut novel with BSB stamps her mark on the furture of sci fi within the lesbian genre. If this book doesnt at least receive nomination and finalist status in the prestigious arena of lesfic awards, then something is definately wrong. I wont retell the story to you here as I could do no better than the book's promotional blurb, suffice to say, this is an excellent read and highly recommended. Congratulations to BSB for signing another winner and congratulations to Lesley Davis for exceeding our expectations. Devlyn
