Product Description A young, healthy accountant dies in the emergency room, and the doctors are unable, or unwilling, to give his wife a clear reason why. Now, it's attorney Jessica Lamm's job to uncover the truth. As the hospital's lawyer grinds the case to a halt, she enlists the help of a colleague. What they discover reveals far more than a simple malpractice suit. The trail leads them deeper into a mire of shady corporations, embezzlement, and drug trafficking. But the more they find, the less Jessica is convinced their prime suspect, the attending ER doctor, is guilty. She will need all her skill and ingenuity if she is going to pin down the real killer.

READ TO COMPLETELY ENJOY AND LEARN SOMETHING WHILE DOING IT November 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
What an extraordinary work that could have been so ordinary if written by an author with less knowledge of their subject and less talent as a wordsmith. It is tempting to say that this is a wonderful novel... for a first time author, but that would be rather unfair, as it is actually a wonderful novel and great read, even for an experienced writer with several books under their belt!
This is a difficult book to review simply due to the nature of its structure; short decisive chapters, each contributing to the overall plot, make it wide open to reveal spoilers as each chapter is so well and closely linked to the overall work, and each holds information crucial to the overall storyline. Suffice to say, that the book starts with the sudden death in an Emergency Room of a young man who simply should not have died. The scenario is pulled right from today's headlines, as this young accountant, with his wife, drops over right in the waiting room, on the floor, before he is even able to be examined by a physician. The victim's wife, and yes, he was indeed a victim, has the presents of mind to note that not all is as it should be.
Enter Jessica Lamm, our heroine; a nurse, who has changed professions and become a lawyer, specializing in the sort of cases that Mary, the deceased husband's wife, finds herself caught up in. Jessica, or Jess and her partner decide to take the case, more on a gut feeling than anything else. At this point our story starts and becomes more and more involved as each page turns.
The overall premise of S.J. Robinson's book a story is a look at both the medical and legal side of today's health care industry. What has gone wrong, why do supposedly professional care givers and supposedly caring adults act in the way they do? Why do members of the legal profession act as they do? Is it money, power, greed or simply the fact that bad things sometimes happen? Ms. Robinson takes us on a trip through our medical and legal system and takes us on an extremely detailed ride! Anyone having the slightest interest in this aspect of our lives and society, and everyone should, will come away with a much greater knowledge of the ins and outs of a hospital practice and how it intertwines with the law as it and they stand today. Fear not though. Even though the author uses many technical terms and complex situations, she takes great care in explaining to the reader just what is happening, how it is happening and why and accomplishes this with great skill.
It is difficult to place this book in a particular genre. There is the medical aspect, the legal of course, and the author has thrown is suspense, humor, fear, mystery, detective work, and yes, a dash of romance here and there; all in a delightful blend. I have to say, that once I started the book, I was hooked by the third page and had difficulty putting it down. The author has the ability to cause you to feel you really know the main character, not only her professional life but her personal. You get to liking Jess quickly and continue to like her throughout the story. Hey, I even liked her cat!
As a personal note: I have worked in the healthcare industry since I was seventeen, starting as a military medic and ending as a risk management consultant for hospitals and nursing homes during the past 25 years, for a total of 46 years working in this environment. I can attest to the fact that this author absolutely knows her subject inside and out. She has it absolutely nailed! I found my self time and again, as I read this book, remembering conversations and situations over the years that paralleled my experiences so closely that it was almost spooky. It was as if the author had spent time digging around in my memories. This was unsettling for me, to say the least. I had to sort of laugh as I noted there was not one character the author introduced, that I swear I have not meet in real life over the years. Let me stress that though the author has used dramatization to present her story, it is all based of complete facts and is all quite credible.
For a read you will not soon for get, for a delightful reading experience, it would be difficult to beat this one. I do hope this will not be the last we hear from Ms Robinson as she is a true talent! I do highly recommend this one!

Expose of medical malpractice November 8, 2008 Just as I always thought!!! Emergency rooms are dangerous places. Good grief!! Just when I thought I'd heard it all, here comes SJ Robinson with a page turner that is romantic, exciting, legalistic and very scary!! I couldn't put it down. The plot is full of twists and courtroom gambits that address them. The legal professionals come off as the good guys. This is overdue to them. The plot is full of decent damaged people who receive help and the criminals- adjudicated or not- who meet their well-deserved end. Good read. Try it. You'll be hooked by the third page. Definitely five stars. Thanks, SJ . It's a winner.
The Price of Death November 6, 2008 I found The Price of Death intensely captivating from the "get go". The death of Brad Thompson and the circumstances preceding death were, most puzzlng and out of the ordinary in the average sudden death situation. These events kept me waiting anxiousy for some connection which would clarify the scenario, but none were immediately forthcoming, which only enhanced the suspence.
The book has a touching romantic relationship between Drew and Jess, and in my view enhanced the viability of the entire story. I seemed a touch of opposition to the drug dealing, corporate sleaze and malpractice, both medically and legally.
I didn't want to interrupt my reading of this facinating book. I recommend it to be a 101 course, literally, in the cost of death.
The conclusion is gratifying. Good ending.
A Must Read November 5, 2008 The author had two goals in the writing of this book. As stated by the author the development of a medical malpractice case is a long and arduous process. The author develops the story with great evidence of medical malpractice knowledge into a compelling story. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MEDICAL MALPRACTICE THIS IS A MUST READ! Details of the knowledge of medical practice and legal practice are clear through out the book.
THE AUTHOR ALSO PROVIDES A VIEW INTO THE WORLD OF THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY AND ISSUES OF CONCERN RELATED TO HEALTH CARE.
The Price of Death brings together the two worlds of medicine and law in a very readable and intriguing story!
She knows whereof she writes November 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As an avid reader of mysteries I found "The Price of Death" by S. J. Robinson very well written and exceptionally realistic. It held my interest to the end. It was very much in tune with the current questionable medicines and other products coming into this country from abroad.
It contained facts, had suspense, an interesting plot, a touching, but not overbearing romance, and was set in places I have lived in or am familiar with which made it perfect.
Let's not forget the cat. Knowing a few people who are extreme cat lovers had me chuckling over Reesa's control of the humans in her life.
Is there another book in the works? Judie in Yakima
