Product Description
Research shows that reading aloud each day is the "single most important activity" that parents can do with their preschoolers and early elementary children. How does a person sort through the countless stacks of mediocre books lining the shelves of libraries and bookstores to uncover the best literature to share with their little ones? And once they hold the quality book in their hand, then what? How can they take full advantage of the read-aloud experience to foster key preliteracy skills? The ABCs of Literacy: Preparing Our Children for Lifelong Learning answers all these questions and many more. Cynthia Dollins provides parents with in-depth information regarding research on the value of reading aloud, how to select great literature, and how to use this literature as a springboard to build phonemic awareness, phonics skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. Parents who are looking to give every possible advantage to their children are shown how to give them a true head start in reading that translates to a head start in school and in life. The ABCs of Literacy balances theory and practice to help parents engage their young children in literacy development. In includes summaries of 300 or more titles of age-appropriate quality literature for children, providing clear and specific criteria to help parents independently select the best books to read to their children. Also included are engaging ways to utilize art, cooking, writing, and drama to extend the read-aloud experience in order to foster their children's greater understanding of what they read.

A Grandmother's Recommendation November 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The ABC's of Literacy is an excellent guide for grandmothers (like me) and for parents who want to help their young children learn to read. Cynthia Dollins uses a wonderful conversational tone that immediately invites you to read on. She recounts many firsthand literacy experiences with her own children and those of her friends.
The author tells all the reasons why it is so important to read aloud each and why adults should read all different types of books to childr3en. I had always focused on stories, but Cynthia Dollins explains why notification, poetry, and other types of books are essential to getting our children ready for school. She also includes lists of books for each genre which have been very helpful to me. There are tables throughout the book to make it easy to see exactly what fun activities you can do with many great books.
I am so glad I found The ABC's of Literacy. It has helped me improve what I read to my grandchildren and how I read it to them.
Outstanding and informative book! October 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As an educator, I have always known the benefit to children of the read-aloud experience as a foundation and framework that helps develop strong readers. In The ABCs of Literacy, Cynthia Dollins has done an exceptional job answering the questions of how and why we read to our children. With her experience as both a professional educator and as a mother, the author has truly captured the essence of the power of learning to read.
Cynthia Dollins' style of writing invites readers to continue their search for information as she seamlessly weaves in her own experiences with research-based information. After reading the book, readers will understand not only the basics of literacy development and the importance of encouraging independent reading, but also how to develop comprehension and select quality literature.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone whose life is touched by children and who seeks to promote solid reading skills for a lifetime of learning.
An excellent guide for parents and educators! October 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. Dollins has filled a void to be sure! As a 23-year veteran in the field of elementary education, as a former elementary school principal of 12 years, and as a parent of two nearly grown children, I can attest to the fact that this book should be in the hands of every parent and carried around as their Bible for raising children who love to read and who thirst for answers to their inquiring minds! For the past ten years, I have focused almost exclusively on suppporting teachers in their efforts to help students read with understanding and meaning. There are many books to help teachers (e.g., books by Keene, Tovani, Miller, Harwayne, Taberski, etc.), but the shelves are bare for parents ... until now!
The ABCs of Literacy by Cynthia Dollins provides an educational expert's look AND a mother's look into the world of reaching, teaching, and motivating our children to read with understanding and joy. Anecdotes taken from her personal life as mommy, mixed with her literacy expertise, provide a plethora of resources upon which to draw. It is important to notice the strong emphasis placed on the essential role of the read aloud experience. Dollins helps parents use the read aloud process to build background knowledge, learn concepts about print, gain phonemic awareness, process sound/symbol recognition (phonics), enhance vocabulary development, and read with meaning (i.e., comprehension)!
Don't miss this opportunity to acquire easy-to-use strategies designed to help you help your child read with joy and understanding!

LOVE THIS BOOK! AN ABSOLUTE MUST-READ! September 26, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have always been a strong advocate for reading aloud to children. Now that we have a 3 year-old grandchild, I share my love of reading with her every time I see her. When I discovered The ABCs of Literacy, this experience became even more meaningful. The first section of the book tells us why it is so important to read to children. I found out so many benefits that I never knew. Now I know that when I read the right books, I am helping teach important literacy skills to my granddaughter. The second section is wonderful because it tells how to select the BEST books to read aloud. The author, Cynthia Dollins, talks about the importance of reading only quality books to our children. Now when I go to the library or bookstore, I bring the Parent Reference Sheet for Selecting Quality Books (at the back of The ABCs) and then I know exactly which books I should bring home. There are even summaries of tons and tons of exceptional books. I love this! Cynthia Dollins shows how to extend the read-aloud experience to make it even more memorable, fun, and educational. My granddaughter and I cook and make crafts with some of the books we read. It is so much fun. I would highly recommend The ABCs of Literacy to anyone who has a child or grandchild, and to anyone who interacts or works with young children. It is a true guide to everything caregivers need to help children learn to read and love books along the way.
