2 out of 5 stars Not real food   July 9, 2008
If you enjoy eating good food, skip this book. No "foodie" or "gourmet" will enjoy these recipes. Not to mention the deception: I made the "fudge" and it doesn't even come close to fudge--it is simply a very dense brownie. It wasn't bad, but I was expecting more. If you want to watch what you eat while eating good, healthy, real food, I recommend Ellie Krieger's "The Food You Crave" instead.

5 out of 5 stars this simplifies my life   July 9, 2008
I've been a fan of the Hungry Girl website for a year or so. I would check in to see what was up, & print out recipes. This book is worth the price, just because I no longer need to shuffle through a bunch of printouts anymore. It saves paper.

The crab stuffed mushrooms are a staple for my Oscar parties. Even SoopahBowl parties. No one is the wiser that the delish appetizer is low-fat.

NOTE: The "hollandaise" for Eggs Bene-Chick fooled my husband, a BIG fan of Eggs Benedict. I will never make real hollandaise again.

2 out of 5 stars Not a major fan of this book.   July 9, 2008
I wanted very badly to like this book. The idea that you can eat enough to be full and find substitutes for the way fattening things that we all love is a great idea. However, in presenting these recipes, there is an overload of aftificial sweetener and some gross-out foods that would not satisfy me in my most desperate hour.

There are ways to consume mass quantities of food and still lose weight if you choose foods that have volume, high water content, fiber and are delicious. Yes, I am talking about fruits and veggies that can be prepared in amazing ways that would satisfy the most ravenous appetite and picky eater. Then, of course, there's lean meat and fish.

After that, go eat the real cheese cake and be done with it. (If, indeed, you still want it!)

3 out of 5 stars I love Hungry Girl but...   July 8, 2008

Let me first of all just say that I LOVE the hungry girl website and email list. However, I was a bit disappointed by the book.

First of all, it's missing some of the best recipes that I have seen on the hungry girl mailing list (enchiladas, anyone?! mmm!) There have been several times that I thought about making a hungry girl recipe, looked it up in the book, and realized that it's not in there! I realize that they couldn't fit every recipe in the book but it's still a little disappointing.

I also wish that there was a picture of most of the recipes in the book. They are available online, but it's pretty inconvenient to look up pictures of things. It'd be nice to be able to flip through and look for something yummy to make. I would have gladly paid more money for a book with pictures of each recipe.

As for the recipes themselves? They're hit or miss. I'm not a fan of the faux-fried Fiber One recipes, and I wish the author would have recommended more seasonings for a lot of the faux-fried recipes. They taste nothing like fried food but they could be decent with proper seasoning! There are definitely several gems within this book, but there are also some very bland recipes.

I also wish that the author had included more dinner foods. The book has a good mix of desserts, appetizers, drinks, sandwiches, etc., but I think many people would agree that dinner recipes are the most sought out.

For the price, it's not a bad little cookbook. However, I'd recommend subscribing to the email list more than I'd recommend getting the book.

4 out of 5 stars Great for dieters.   July 5, 2008
Love this cook book. This would be more helpful if the Weight Watchers points were included, but gives you everything you need know to calculate. Great book!
